SOLVED!

I upgraded from a non-HDMI videocard to a HDMI videocard. Because the HDMI port is considered an audio device and there were no cables running to my HDMI port, the "playback devices" portion of the sound bar stated that there was no audio device connected to it.

I went into the playback devices and disabled the HDMI audio port and all is well.

Just FYI.

try this.this one worked for me

1. Click Start, type Services.msc in the Start Search box.

2. Scroll down the list of services, right-click Windows Audio and select Start.

3. Select Properties for Windows Audio and set its Startup Type to Automatic.

If the Windows Audio service does not start and you get the error Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start, then make sure that the following services are started and their Startup Type is set to Automatic.
Plug and Play
Multimedia Class Scheduler
Windows Audio Endpoint Builder

thanks for the suggested fix

however, my system has always had the services you suggest start automatically and have always been running when the problem occurred

on this basis (for me at least) it is not the fix

in fact, on my system everything is working as it should, sound and all, it's just i very occasionally get an error flag in the system tray which means the error is that i get the error flag

i can not remember the last time i got the red flag in the system tray so maybe mine is fixed??
how or why it's fixed??

cheers

hi, my comp is having some audio problems and i need help.
-windows 7 ultimate 32 bit-

it says i have no audio playback device installed?

One or more audio service isn't running?

Both the Windows Audio and the Windows Audio End Point Builder services must be running for audio to work correctly. Atleast one of these services isn't running?

i dont know what to do.?

I cant start windows normally, i have to run in safe mode.
I get SCoD if i try to start in normal windows 7.

Audio service and endpoint builder won't run in my Acer

I have the 32-bit version of Windows7 Home premium and nothing seems to repair the problem. I have tried recommendations listed but no go. In fact, when I do try to start either program it also disables the Windows wireless service.

What's the connection between to two? Any other ideas short of re-loading Windows?

Thanks

Same thing here. Moving volume slider fixes it but I am puzzled at all the bugs with all the icon trays. Half the time they do not show up and you have to go to task manager and stop explorer then restart it to correct problem. It is getting quite annoying. I even reset upper and lower string values in regedit but problem keeps returning. What's the deal Microsoft?:sleepy:

Disable video card HD

If you just installed a new video card or updated drivers it may have enabled the HD audio drivers on the card. I you are using native audio you may have to go to device manager and disable HD audio from graphics card. This may correct red X as you have no HDMI connected to graphics card and your PC is looking for that connection. Hope this helps:D

You can also right click on audio icon and click sounds and then playback. It should show an HDMI cable unplugged from your video card. Simply right click on that and choose disable to correct problem. Only do this if you donot intend to use your HDMI from your video card for sound

Bug Fix Priorities

If MS is like most software houses, bugs which don't prevent users from using a feature get a very, very low priority on the "list of things to do". And since a) the service works, and b) the appearance of the red cross can be so easily fixed, I suspect this is near the bottom of their fix list.

mine does exactly the same as JackDinn describes
the service is actually running but tray icon says differently
minor pita but nicer if it did what it was supposed to do

simply restarting the service makes the red cross go away

i have also noticed some other erratic issues with other tray icons as well
possibly it's general issue with windows 7 as it never did such things with vista

addendum

booted the pc tonight
audio service had the red cross
clicked on it
volume slider opened
adjusted volume
red cross went away
go figure

Same here.

Just tried adjusting the audio as suggested and the red cross disappeared.

What gives?

No ideas here either, I simply pressed the mute button on my keyboard a couple of times and the cross disappeared as well. Gotta love the bugs :D

Oh well, a bug like this is easy to work with and I'm sure they'll fix it eventually.

that's what i did. didn't see someone else same thing X) ..since simple adjust volume didn't work (already maxed =.=)

It seems as a version of Windows ages its harder and harder for the startup items to remain conflict free. I have surmised that when items don’t startup correctly we get the X or items missing etc. It seems silly to me that Microsoft can’t make this start up process rock solid. I use Logitech software to customize my mouse. It use to start up fine. Now it won’t start on its own when I turn my machine on.

Wireless keyboard, perhaps?

I picked up the same issue, but only after I installed a wireless keyboard. Anyone with this problem have a regular wired kb?
