On occasion when i boot up im getting a red cross on my volume control in the tray and hovering over it it says the "audio service is not running" but the service is running, i get sound and everything is working fine. Looking at the services i find windows audio service and yep its running fine & set to automatic but there is still the red cross in my tray?

at the moment im having to "restart" this service to get rid of the notification and the red cross but its a pain.

Only happens about 20% of the time.

I have the latest sound drivers.

have done a search but its all about this service failing to start & giving errors etc.

any ideas anyone,

Thx all,
JackDinn.

mine does exactly the same as JackDinn describes
the service is actually running but tray icon says differently
minor pita but nicer if it did what it was supposed to do

simply restarting the service makes the red cross go away

i have also noticed some other erratic issues with other tray icons as well
possibly it's general issue with windows 7 as it never did such things with vista

addendum

booted the pc tonight
audio service had the red cross
clicked on it
volume slider opened
adjusted volume
red cross went away
go figure

Same here.

Just tried adjusting the audio as suggested and the red cross disappeared.

What gives?

No ideas here either, I simply pressed the mute button on my keyboard a couple of times and the cross disappeared as well. Gotta love the bugs :D

Oh well, a bug like this is easy to work with and I'm sure they'll fix it eventually.

I got this problem too for the very first time today. Adjusting the volume just fixed it.

Also, sometimes when i delete an item in windows explorer, the item does not disappear, it just stays there as if i had no deleted it, although, i cannot use it, refresh does nothing, but if i browse to another folder, then return, it will be gone -

-So i wonder if this is happening for a similar reason?

Just upgraded from Nvidia 8800 to ATI 5700, same as the poster above, and I have the same problem.

I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the audio out fuctionality of the HDMI ports on the new ATI cards?

Sliding the volume made the X go away for me too.

Ladies and Gents, I also came across this annoying issue and here's how I fixed it:

The problem is caused by the OS not loading the Realtek HD Audio driver(s) before the service is started.

To fix it, I simple removed the Realtek HD audio device (un-install from devmgmt) and then reinstalled (preferably with Realtek's latest driver package: Available HERE

Simply reboot after the driver is reinstalled and that should do the trick. Don't get a fright if the red X is still there DIRECTLY after explorer.exe loads as it will disapear once the OS is fully loaded.

Cheers

If only it were that simple for me...

I have the same problem, however, no amount of rebooting will rectify the problem. All necessary devices are enabled, however, when selecting the Playback devices dialog, there are no devices listed. I don't even get the option of a volume slider to play with.

A quick check of the startup menu via msconfig shows that the needed apps are loading and the device manager also shows no errors with hardware, so I am at a loss what the problem could be.

I do have the same problem, yet I couldn't resolve it through sliding at the volume. As it won't play sound still. And even after re-enabling the disabled service, often (not always ) the sound still doesn't work.

Any ideas? I'm just reinstalling the Creative X-Fi drivers, hope it helps...

I just got that Red Flag in the System Tray and the "Audio System is not Running". I read the posts and adjusted the volume while the red "X" was there and it disappeared. I am finding little bugs in Windows 7 all the time. Thanks for the tip!
