Windows Update will not run ... says service is not running but it is

Thanks again! BTW ... I have not kicked off a Windows Update but there seem to have been some updates that came down. While there are still some outstanding issues would it make sense to try a Windows Update?

They may well fail, but shouldn't cause any new problems if they do.

I'm having problems sourcing that last file - simply can't find which update it came from!

Still - we can try getting rid of this error

(w) Unable to read Event Log 0x0000001F System

in the meantime.

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command -

MOVE C:\Windows\System32\winevt\System.evtx "%userprofile%"\desktop

upload the resulting file on your desktop to your reply, and reboot - then run another CheckSUR scan and post the resulting CheckSUR.log file

I was finally able to try this last step. First that file isn't in the location specified. There is a system.evtx file in C:\Windows\System32\winevt\logs\ but it won't let me move it because it's in use. I was able to copy it and then zip it. That's what I've attached here.

And I've attached the other logs as requested.

The event log appears to be corrupt - try this....
Boot to Safe Mode, and run the following commands from an Elevated Command Prompt

SC STOP WECSVC
SC STOP WERSVC
SC STOP EVENTLOG
DEL C:\Windows\System32\winevt\System.evtx


Assuming the last command runs without problems, reboot and then post a new copy of the file.
If the command fails, post the exact error message.

Hi .. I wasn't able to stop WECSVC nor WERSVC (and of course I forgot to copy the exact error but the error was bc these services were not started). I was able to stop EVENTLOG but the delete didn't find the file in the location you specified. As I noted earlier, SYSTEM.EVTX is in c:\windows\system32\winevt\logs\ on my computer.

I went ahead and deleted that file, rebooted, but I still cannot copy it to the desktop bc it's in use. So I just went into Explorer and copied it to the desktop ... zipped it ... and uploaded it. I hope this gives you what you need.

23-Dec: Hi @NoelDP ... I still haven't tried to run a Windows Update but some updates are happening. When I started using my laptop this morning it had rebooted last night as a result of some updates. I'm still waiting for the green light from to move forward on running Update again and the Windows 10 update.
