So this happens with everyone that installed SP2? Doesn't it suck having to wait for the CHKDSK every bootup? Weird I am the first person to even query about this issue.
A scheduled a check disk if you set will run for about 3-4 minutes as expected for a complete scan of the drive as well as fixing any errors if that option is selected. The quick scan seen with SP2 however goes right by in only a few seconds. And that's with several drives in use here.
When first getting past the post tests you see a quick listing of each drive very briefly like a new automatic quick scan only item added in. With Vista's SuperFetch replacing XP's PreFetch you then saw the defragmenter running low profile in the background keeping the drive at a 0% fragmentation level.
Apparently MS added one more thing in for Vista rather then waiting until some startup problem comes up and you run the startup repair this will scan and likely alert to any problem just starting to be seen would be possible idea for seeing this one.
Getting back to you there Dragonfly you know as well as I do that Vista is far more stable and secure then XP ever could be. The main problem however is that Vista came out 3 times larger in size in some ways over XP being a little too much for a high percentage of older machines.
7 on the other hand was MS realizing that Windows couldn't continue to constantly grow and grow and grow...

You see more drive space used for 7 while the core elements saw a majpr change in general.
You can see that when each install of 7 goes on in half the time it took for XP even to reach the desktop for the first time after 40 minutes there. Instead of seeing the bloated gui mesh with core as the OS continue to grow 7 has been reworked from the ground floor up not just a pile of new items thrown on the same thing.
