I have 4 drives in my PC. On each drive there is a hidden file named diskfile1 and on a couple of the drives there is an additional hidden file named diskfile2. There is no file extension. The files were created by Win7. Can anyone tell me exactly what these files are used for. I don't have a problem with the files but I hate not knowing what they do.

Any feedback is much appreciated.

How do you know the file was created by the operating system?

You don't happen to live in Kentucky, do you?

The files showed up on a new install before any other applications were installed so it had to be Win7 that installed them.

I live in Houston.

Looks like about dump memory, space disk not sufficient. Has it happen you got Blue screen? Might be a dump file.

No Problems whatsoever.

In fact, now that I think about it I remember seeing these files on the first Win7 install I did but didn't think anything about it at the time. I wonder if someone else might check to see if they have the same files...you would have to uncheck Hide Windows System files and also check view Hidden files in the control panel Folder Options Applet

I do not have those.

You might want to run an SFC /Scannow and drive disk check, just in case.

Go into your Windows folder, view "Details", and arrange by date created. You should see when the majority created dates are, which would give you the approximate time the OS was installed. Now go back to the files in question, view "Details", and see when they were created. If they were created at OS install, they should have the same times of creation.

I checked the installation times and it turns out they are NOT in fact Windows files...they were generated by the first application I always install - my image backup and restore program - mystery solved. I should have picked up on that but I never looked at the disk contents until windows and the backup program had been installed and didn't check the creation times when I first noticed them.

thanks
