Win7 SP1 released to public

(Sorry if it's been brought up already)

Having a 32bit system and 4GB of ram installed, I knew that windows wouldn't use my full 4 gigs. On my performance page it would state that I had 4 but told me in brackets (Using 3.25) but I noticed after installing SP1 that it now just says 4GB. I re-ran the performance test and my score jumped up.

Is this really possible?
The same thing happens to me long ago with vista sp1 :D

im not a fan of 64bit, it slowed boot up time on my old set up and a few friends said it did the same on there system, plus it used more resources (RAM)

Allthough i could prob now go with 64 now i have quad core, SSD etc..I'm not sure if i want to since i *only* have 4gigs and 64 seems to love taking up RAM, i didn't notice any perfomance benifits either.

If the RAM is there, it might as well be used right?

You really won't notice any performance benefits untill you start getting into the 6gb of RAM area.

SP1 install issue

Maybe before any SP1 install....

System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [February 2011]

Download details: System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [February 2011]

SP1 will not install nor will anything else after trying that one. Ran System update readiness tool and it wanted to download and install hotfix KB947821. I downloaded the hotfix but it will not install no matter how long I wait. I tried a system restore and that no longer works either.Any help or ideas would be most appreciated.

Free RAM is wasted RAM. Windows Vista and later purposely use more RAM than XP and earlier versions.

I just thought of something else that might need mentioning. If you have tweaked/ modified/customized your system what you did may prevent SP1 from installing. More specifically, if you have modified some system files to say change the start orb, modify icons to remove the shortcut arrow, modded themes, modded your start menu etc, that could cause the SP1 install to fail. The installer may not be able to cope with the modified files. Changing folder permissions would be another deal breaker I would think. Just something to keep in mind if you encounter problems trying to install SP1.

Exactly! I don't know why this would be different with SP1 unless Microsoft completely re-wrote the code for 32-bit RAM limitations.

What I did to ensure a successful SP1 installation was to run the SFC /SCANNOW Command before installing SP 1 and even returned log in screen to default wallpaper. Afterword you should be able to re-enable/re-install your customizations.

About 5 months ago I was experimenting with custom themes and tinkering with system files which resulted in the " your windows may not be genuine message " so after a restoring from a good image I now only make minor changes/tweaks (that are not harmful but do change system files) such as " show drive letter first " or " hide libraries in navagation pane " also I change the log on screen (can't stand the default wallpaper).

I just ran the sfc/scannow command to return system files to normal as a precaution to ensure successful installation.

As far as the 4gb of ram you are seeing listed the 32bit Windows is simply reporting the full amount of physical memory installed not what is available to the 32bit Windows itself. With Vista once SP1 was on it would then display the total physical memory installed whether 4gb, 6gb, 8gb while the 32bit kernel seemed limited to the 3.571gb approx. seen at the time.

Now for installation hangs and fails after a reboot note the link on the error screen. MS now updated the information for what steps to take for a particular error. If you have ever restored a system image open an elevated command prompt and type "mountvol /E" and restart the system after exiting the prompt. WHAMO! SP1 goes right on!

It seems the installer plays stubborn at read and access of existing primaries. Here that fact about restored images was never seen until the finished SP was out. Likewise look over the MS page to see what steps are listed for seeing the SP go on without fuss.

If you don't have anything to lose wiping a drive on the other hand a clean install can also solve any problems. But if you have a lot tied up in softwares and can't have the down time to start everything over fresh the error page will now likely have a few things to try out.

All I did was install on Windows as is on two different machines. No resetting anything. On the flip side I never "tweak" Windows anyway, just run as meant to be.

Yeah I guess when you make system wide changes like that there could be some strange things that happen later on down the road. At least you know what's happend and was able to get it sorted.

I worry about others that make system wide changes and then wonder why later on down the line Windows is acting strange, or is no longer recognized.... and have no clue to what happened

But that's a different argument for a different thread.
