Win7 SP1 released to public

(Sorry if it's been brought up already)

Having a 32bit system and 4GB of ram installed, I knew that windows wouldn't use my full 4 gigs. On my performance page it would state that I had 4 but told me in brackets (Using 3.25) but I noticed after installing SP1 that it now just says 4GB. I re-ran the performance test and my score jumped up.

Is this really possible?

I got opposite effect.
I have laptop with 2GB ram well its normal that i use 32bit so I installed SP1
and my memory now is 2GB (1.80GB usable) and WEI dropped.
Before it showed only 2GB of ram.
and my WEI every time pc restarts says it needs to be refreshed.

Have now upgraded all pc's in the home network to SP1 and it was an interesting experience.

Main desktop (x64 ultimate) went without a hitch but my network adapter was changed from a home network to a public network in the network and sharing center. Took a few minutes to figure out what was going on but now back to normal.

HTPC (x64 pro) mostly ok, seemed to hang at 96% installed forcing me to cancel out, system hung and forced a reboot where SP1 completed the install and is now fine (weird).

Wifes laptop (x86 HP) hung at 95% but again completed after a little persuasion.

All in all.....not the best SP upgrade I've experienced from Microsoft but issues were easily fixed and systems are stable. I will give it a couple of weeks and if no issues then time for new baseline backups (permanent retention) with my Windows Home Server.

Is there anywhere to download a microsoft official ISO including SP1. I have slipstreamed SP1 and the ISO is 2.69 GB (2889379840kb 32 bit OS). I do wonder if the ISO may be a smaller size if microsfot produced the ISO.

Any thoughts?

The Microsoft Official ISO with SP1 already integrated into Windows 7 is only available officially to MSDN and Technet subscribers. But I don't think it would be that much smaller than what you made. Heck, I remember the Vista RTM 32-bit DVD was about 2.3 GB or 2.4 GB but Vista with SP2 32-bit integrated had balloned up to 3.02 GB.

Force cancel (and restart), re-apply the update in windows update if necessary. It appears as if it actually completes the download and/or install without completing the countdown on the updates screen (almost as if the update screen is hung).

Well after nearly a full day with SP1 on two systems, I feel pretty good about it.

I posted earlier that Windows Search was very active right after the SP1 installation, but that stopped, on both systems. It seems like it was working something out.

Anyway everything seems exactly the same. I did a number of benchmarks, all normal. I didn't expect any real gains, but more importantly, at least for me, no losses anywhere. I have tons of software on the HP machine and everything works. Maybe I'm a tad lucky, but regardless this seems like a good pack.

Really happy.

After installing SP1, I feel that my file explorer browsing in general, especially over the local network is much faster and snappier. Also it also seems to have sped up usb flash cards and sticks somewhat.

This makes sense. I had a problem with back ups to an external
drive(over USB) and contacted MS. I was told to install an update that
was not released to the wild that solved my problem. Makes me
think this update was included in SP1.

Check this link and look at the 2nd file "Hot Fixes and Security Updates xxxx". Shows 795 items. Hot Fixes were not released through WU but could be manually downloaded if you were having a specific problem, now everyone gets them.

Microsoft notes Windows Update "inconsistencies," provides fix

see also: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/69152-windows-update-troubleshoot-shortcut-create.html
and: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/472-troubleshooting.html

Any time Microsoft pushes an update to a few hundred million users, you can expect some hiccups. I’ve been monitoring the progress of Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 since it was released to the public earlier this week, both on Microsoft’s official Windows Update forum and via e-mail and Twitter.

So far, aside from the issue with non-bootable partitions that I highlighted yesterday, this looks like a successful rollout. But it’s not completely trouble-free. Most of the error messages I’m seeing in reports have to do with Windows Update, with error codes like 80073712, 800706BE, and 8024200D. Those sorts of errors have been a fact of life with Windows Update for years, but this time around, Microsoft has quietly acknowledged an “inconsistency” in the Windows Update code that might cause more problems than normal.

That's still a bit odd to be seeing it hang on multiple systems. With the beta and later RC the hang would occur at the 99% mark and then suddenly see the reverting changes message when those attempts failed on the 64bit here.

With the final version the error page now shows corrective measures that when used on the second attempt saw an immediate success without any hang at the end. The SP took a 50min. total before the restart/config began but that was it.

You likely needed to take a few preparation steps missed out on resulting in the hangs you saw in order for the smooth finish to be seen. I still have another 64bit Home Premium desktop to see updated with everything including SP1. That should go a bit faster however typically only seeing light use at that.

I used Windows Update a few hours ago and got SP1 installed.
One thing that happened was after the install when I pressed "Restart" it did the normal "Logging off" and "Configuring Updates" stuff, but it stayed at "Shutting down" for an hour to I held the power button for 5 seconds to turn off the computer and pressed the power button again to turn it on and it continued on.
Any reason why it hung like that?

There most likely is. Prior to public release the beta testers were only complaining about uninstall options for it. Seems that going from beta to full release, a lot of problems have crept in.

I had to reformat just to get it installed, as it kept failing to install and not even the readiness pack resolved the issue. The system was fully patched and clean (so said MSE2 and MBAM) and a SFC scan reported no issues. The SP also bugged out my WU, so I had to use a reset bat thing to get it back to normal working order.

I've been reading the problem threads about SP1 here and I remember seeing someone say that it won't install if you have certain drivers (like Intel display drivers-- I have an Intel Display chip+drivers), which is kind of bull.

i think you may have more than a few bugs with this sp1

Knew there must be changes with WMP since I had to set it up again. Sure enough it now has codecs to play MP4's. Still waiting for it to play Real files so I can get rid of that junk.

Haha. Real Player. The program that defies all instruction.

VLC is supposed to play Real files, as well as almost anything else on the planet. That's the only player that I use. No way I will allow that Real junk on my machine ;).

just a quick note b4 i go to bed ive really had enough of the computer today.. i installed the sp1 last night and shut down only to find when i got up this morning i had a bootmgr is missing msg and after trying repair and rollback more than a few times i had to format after a fresh install and with only a few drivers on i reinstalled sp1 and rebooted and it had a bs and had to repair or roll back again atm i cant open windows update to see if sp is installed or not but i dont think my pc is happy regardless i think you may have more than a few bugs with this sp1
when i got up this morning it took a good 5 mins to boot into windows then another 2 to load ie when looking at my windows update it says the sp1 failed to install but i know it has done a rollback as my virus protection that i installed the same day is also not installed now im trying once again to install sp1 but now it is just saying downloading and its stuck at 0% and i have not installed my virus protection yet as i saw that was an isue for some
