I have posted on another thread the full problem but can someone tell me what these error messages mean as my mate cnnot get the SP1 to download, and the troubleshooter is telling us it's fixed - but it's not!!

Everything else like the x64 for 7 and security stuff is ok!

im not a fan of 64bit, it slowed boot up time on my old set up and a few friends said it did the same on there system, plus it used more resources (RAM)

Allthough i could prob now go with 64 now i have quad core, SSD etc..I'm not sure if i want to since i *only* have 4gigs and 64 seems to love taking up RAM, i didn't notice any perfomance benifits either.

If the RAM is there, it might as well be used right?

You really won't notice any performance benefits untill you start getting into the 6gb of RAM area.

that's what i mean, until i use another 2GB stick, i will be sticking with 32bit, from my experience and others, its faster and i'm yet to see the benifits of a 64bit win7 on a 4GB system. Sure it free's up 500mb of RAM but then it uses more RAM anyway. I'm not going to worry about loosing 500mb RAM really, even when gaming i don't go past the 3GB mark.

Thanks NoN I did install MSE yesterday for him as he had nothing except the Defender (and no firewall running) on the machine.

I laso just downloaded MBAM too and both have come up with no hits - just wondering what to try next?

I am not that savvy but it looks like a complete format job if there is nothing else and yes they didn't give him the OEM disk either.

Could be wise and easier if you've got nothing to loose...Was looking around but most is for Vista x64...just too new for a Windows 7.

Backup your stuff, then.

You should be able to create your own restore disk if you're on Laptop or OEM desktop. (see also the mfg's recovery partition manual and keyboard key to access it on boot)

Either, i do not think you'll regret it that much after!

Thanks again NoN I'll get onto him and ask him what he wants to do about it.

Trouble is the poor bugga doesn't have a lot of disposable income and can't afford the techs to do it but I have got a spare ext HDD here he can have - my only concern is that if I back the machine up won't the malware go with it??

It might! That's why you should better format then clean install his laptop. Or if the SP1 stand-alone.exe works, you're gonna have sometime after to find a solution.

Ok NoN now presents a problem now as he doesn't have the OEM or upgrade disk or details of them so looks like getting a completely new OEM, which is a pain not doing it just the cost to this poor bloke.

If he bought the laptop Oem pre-installed , he should have a hidden restore partition somewhere...go in disk management to check whenever it does exist one hidden partition:

ButtonStart=> Run=> (type) diskmgmt.msc =>Ok

If so, there a software on his machine able to create restore disc in the start menu or a key on keyboard to access to the restore menu (F8 or F10 or F12)

My only issue so far is Windows Search is very active, since the update, constant 2-10% Cpu usage, on both systems.

Otherwise, it seems anyone running Ad-Aware AV will need to close it before updating, especially if updating via Windows Update.

I haven't noticed any hits or gains since the SP went on. Besides any security fixes it will enabled support for new features not put to use at this time where you would likely notice them however. But I also run with 8gb of ram, a 1tb video card, and a relatively fast cpu on the 64bit Windows not expecting to see any large differences performance wise here.

Actually that's 1gb not 1tb of video memory. Sorry for the typo before. But when comparing that to some seen on old cases I've been refurbishing lately it does seem a lot like 1tb!
(They do have some 2gb cards out however if you want to spend and spend big.)

What is being looked at now however will be anything noticable good or bad since 7 has been running premo since an image made and later restored to the drive has been working well for nearly 6 months. The hardware analogy was simply noting that no big boost or performance hits are to be expected.

I agree with your assessment. There are no significant performance gains or losses in regard to SP1. I have noticed a bit of an uptick in start up time (very minor) after a few days of having installed it (at first, start up times were much longer than pre-SP1) and a .1 increase on two of my WEI scores. Nothing to write home about, indeed.

After installing SP1, I feel that my file explorer browsing in general, especially over the local network is much faster and snappier. Also it also seems to have sped up usb flash cards and sticks somewhat. At least this is my impression since yesterday.

Today after updating to avast 6.0 (from 5.1), the system seem even better.

I suspect you might notice a slight increase in startup time as expected since any service pack adds to the OS. Windows in that sense will then grow in size.

With 7 being a performer from the start however you won't expect to see any large performance hit while some may encounter some other interesting issues still to be seen.

(gee a 1tb video card? I wouldn't mind a look at one! )
