Windows 7 reboots everytime I select shutdown

Thought I'd just give an update on this situation. Nothing I tried worked so I had to get someone out to look at it. After another reinstall of Windows (which didn't help), he tried disabling my media hard drives, wireless card, graphics card and had a good play about with the settings in the BIOS. Nothing worked.

Then he removed the motherboard battery which solved the problem. Have no idea what caused the problem but glad to say it's solved. Today is the first time I've seen your post wilywombat. I had previously read online that this might solve my problem but not wanting to mess around inside my pc with things I don't really understand, I didn't give it a go.

At least now I know where the battery is and how to remove it easily! Thanks to everyone who posted on this thread, much appreciated.

I know the cause; looking for solution

My custom built computer (March 2010) has refused to shutdown since day 1. It's been in the shop for some other things over the past year which have since been resolved but the restart on shutdown has never been resolved. The tech at the store thought it was a USB connected device (sevenforums had posts that said that too) and I tried unplugging them all one by one and perform shutdown. But each time it would restart. The tech looked at it in the shop and said it would shutdown there.

After spending more time that I wanted to spend I decided to just live with it. But finally after about 4 months of frustration I took it to the shop again just today. I wanted to watch it shutdown myself. I was sure it would not. But it did! It shutdown! So what was different from shop to home? The only thing that was really different was my dual display at home.

I got home and plugged in just the Gateway, the keyboard and mouse. Period. Startup. Shutdown. By golly, it restarted on shutdown! With just the Dell plugged in it will shutdown.

So it has to do with the Gateway. What's the difference between the Gateway and the Dell? Apparently it has to do with the connector to the computer. That's what I think. The Dell has the standard blue connector which I believe is VGA. The Gateway has a white connector which I believe is DVI.

With VGA connected alone computer will shutdown.

With DVI connected alone computer restarts upon shutdown.

So now I know what is causing it to restart upon shutdown but what can I do to correct it? I looked at NVIDIA Control Panel but didn't find anything to help there.

Anyone have any ideas? I'd sure appreciate your advice!

I got to thinking about that day 1 comment and think the restart upon shutdown issue didn't start until the last complete reinstall of Win 7 which was done by the dealer's tech. Which makes me think it might be a driver. But the driver for Gateway HX2000 is dated 2009 and I didn't buy it until 2010. Maybe I should try to download it anyway. I'll post results.

Did a driver download from official Gateway site. All that downloaded was a folder with HX2000.INF and HX2000.ICM. No executable file. But I tried to shutdown anyway and it restarted.

One last bit of information. The last rebuild they installed Win7 64 bit. It had been 32 bit previously.

Last post. Do I hear a large collective sigh? Anyhow, if I shut off the DVI monitor right after clicking SHUTDOWN it will shutdown. I can live with that. Don't know why but there's something odd going on with the DVI monitor. Would still be interested to hear what anyone has to say about it.

Does your Gateway have a VGA connector as well as a DVI? If so you could try using it on VGA and see if the problem is still there. If it goes away, you could buy a DVI to VGA adaptor and run both monitors via VGA.

Thanks, wilywombat, connected the Gateway via VGA and the computer shuts right down.

If I buy an adapter so that both monitors are connected via VGA will the computer still recognize two discrete monitors? So that different content can show on each?

And doesn't this sound like a limitation of Win 7 64 bit? Should I report it? And, if so, where?

Re the adaptor..if you buy the one that converts your dvi output to vga then the Gateway will display whatever you were putting out via the DVI only in vga format.

Re the reporting...you could try asking the question to Microsoft re 64 bit.

Does that mean it shuts down correctly? Yes! You were right on the money! I checked this link DVI and VGA explained and there are different cables so I would not know which one to get at this time. I'll probably have to check with the store's tech to see what video card is installed.

I will look into reporting the "issue" to Microsoft.

Good to hear all's well!! Last tip... you can get an adaptor that connect to the DVI output on your card and then connect to the monitor via a standard VGA cable! here's a link to Amazon..
