I just installed IE9, so far, I like it

Just one thing that I thought was odd...

Why would they change favorites to the right side of the window? is there a way to change it back to the left sde or is it something I just have to get used to?

It opened here on the right side as well. Plus you presently don't see the Add to Favorites button displayed along with the home page, Favorites, and Tools buttons on the beta.

The new version is expected to have somewhat of a new look once the finished version is available. The beta however is still in beta form and will be seeing some additional changes before IE 9 is final. That's where the "organize" option will then be available as well as for things like having the menu bar, navigation pane, and other things available.

You can turn on the IE9 Menu bar to be able to open Favorites from the menu bar on the left side.

I tried that here and as you can see they still open at the right. This is most likely due to which flavor of the beta you are running. The 64bit is in use here.

The small arrow button at the upper right of the Favorites will move it over to the left. The default however is at the right. When closed and then reopened they appear back on the right again until clicking on the small green arrow.

That disappears once they are moved to the left until reopened.

Yes, but then it makes having the Favorites bar pointless to have. Why would you want to have both the Menu and Favorites bar exposed which takes up 2 rows?

Yes you can hit CTRL + Shift + I to bring up the Favorites on the left side, yes you can do the 2 step procedure of hitting the star on the right then pinning it on the left, but the point is it wasn't a problem being on the left side to begin with, why change what wasn't broke or in need of fixing?

The Lock Toolbars option doesn't appear to do anything. If anyone knows what it really does, please enlighten me because I've yet to see a reason for having it.

The Favorites bar and the IE Favorites are two different things entirely. The bar is used your most frequently visited sites(like SF! ) while the IE Favorites acts like a library of links.

The Favorites bar itself simplifies things when going back and forth to various sites without having to bring out a dropdown list of sites. For those who use it the convenience is a bit more obvious for them.

As for the unlock option right click over by the "help" item on the menu bar for the check off options there. If you are still running the RC however you will want to remove that for the finished version now seen.

I'm using IE9 Final, not RC.

From my perspective it makes no sense to have Favorites open up on the right with the option to pin it to the left, it's like they knew people would still prefer to have it always available on the left-hand side. Then there's the issue of those who have it pinned to the left but have no option to move it back to the right without closing and reopening Favorites.

I know what you're saying, I know that the Favorites Bar and Menu Bar which has Favorites are 2 different things that show up on 2 separate rows. However if Favorites were on the left side like in IE8 there'd be no reason to even expose the Menu Bar in the first place.

Well when looking at the beta finding the ffavorites on the opposite was also annoying here as well. Instead all you see there now is the add to favorites button with everything else including Links jammed over on the right.

I guess you have to put up with the discomforts in order to get in on the new support this version will now offer.

I absolute agree - I also don't like this behaviour.

You can do a work around:
Open folder "C:\Users\<your-name>\Favorites\Links" and within this folder create a new folder - e.g. with name "Favorites".

In Internet Explorer enable "Favorites bar" - there should now appear this former created folder "Favorites" as folder. Move this folder to the left. Put all your links into this folder. Voila - now you have your "Favorites" on left side as pull down menu.

In the same way you also can create several other folders which include links to special themes; e.g. "Business", "Private", "Hobby", "School", "Holiday". You also can use very short folder names like "1", "2", "3" to save space.

You also can associate different icons to the folder for better distinguish.

If you click on the "Star" icon at the top right of IE9, then it will open the "Favorites Center" at the right when it's not pinned (green arrow at top left in Favorites Center on right side) to the left.

I have to wonder if there's a way to set to open at the left rather then the need to move it each time. MS knew people would want to move it back to the left since this was something new but a setting to make that default. But with the menu bar visible you also see the Favorites there as well and that drops down near the left side.

There's no way - the favorites drop-down is part of the new address bar/tab combo - while you can move the tabs down under the address bar, you can no longer move the other UI elements. I have a feeling pinning the favorites is old IE8 code (note it looks exactly like it did in IE8 when you pin it) that will die in some future version.

I personally prefer the lesser-used buttons moved to the right and the address bar and forward/back buttons staying to the left, but that's just me.

But have a look to your header rows - you have five rows:

1. Nearly empty row - only on right site: minimize, maximize and close button
2. Address bar and tab bar
3. Menu bar
4. "Norton" bar
5. Favorites bar

The original Internet Explorer 9 UI comes with only two rows:

1. Nearly empty row - only on right site minimize, maximize and close button
2. Address bar and tab bar

Especially when your screen high is very low (e.g. Netbook with screen high of 600 px) you are happy to reduce as many rows as possible.

There's no way - the favorites drop-down is part of the new address bar/tab combo - while you can move the tabs down under the address bar, you can no longer move the other UI elements.

Perhaps wait for the first registry hacks.

Remember:

• Internet Explorer 8 has an Address bar and a separate search bar. With a registry hack you can disable the search bar.
• In Internet Explorer 8 you can activate the menu bar. But the menu bar is always under the address bar. With a registry hack you can move the menu bar above the address bar.

So you can modify the UI of Internet Explorer 8 - perhaps later on also in Internet Explorer 9.

In addition to my workaround to integrate a self-created favoites folder into the favorites bar: This solution has the disadvantage that you have to maintain this folder by your-self (copy favorites links to this folder to have it up-to-date).

But you can create a folder "junction" to the favorites folder:
mklink /J "C:\Users\<your-name>\Favorites\Links\Favorites" "C:\Users\<your-name>\Favorites"
Then the folder "junction" shows always the same content like the real favorites folder and no maintain is necessary.

And a folder "junction" in the favorites bar works as a dropdown menu (whilst a folder link to the favorites folder opens a new folder).

Actually when pressing the alt key the "File" item on the menu bar is hightlighted making the bar visible. That's typical with any type of window with a menu bar even in various programs.

The View>Explorer bar click on the Favorites item does see the list open on the left as you would have seen in IE 8. You can also resize it with single left click to hold on the inner edge to widen or narrow it while open. But they remain open until clicking on the X to close.
