Inconsistant SFC /Scannow Results

Running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1

Ran an SFC /scannow to see what would come up, and I received a notice about two related to Microsoft speech recognition. SFC stated the files could not be repaired, so I went ahead and pulled new copies off of my DVD and replaced them, and then rescanned.

The rescan still showed the same files as corrupt (but now also showed some .ttf fonts corrupt). I pulled the fonts off and replaced them, and then checked the DVD to compare the file properties of the two speech files. Both the ones on the HD and the DVD were identical.

Tried again, rescanned, and again the same speech files came up in the log but also a new set of different files.

Long story short, everytime I run a /scannow, I seem to get different corrupt files coming up, eventually disappearing after a few runs, though the speech recognition files keep coming back.

Are these false positives in SFC?

As an aside, I have next to no problems with my PC. Everything runs well, no Windows errors for anything, play games without issue... it's probably one of the most stable builds I've ever run.

I'm attaching my sfcdetails file with a couple different runs (all on the same boot). A subsequent reboot may come up with different files.

Lastly, one thing to note, my Windows drive is on an OCZ Vertex 2 SSD using the Sandforce controller. I had a theory that the Sandforce's (which saves writes wear on the MLC by compressing files) compression may be screwing up the hash values. I haven't seen anything on the OCZ forums to suggest this is a fact, though.

Thanks for any help/insight!

Hello JetBlack, welcome to Seven Forums!

If you would like to try an sfc /scan that runs 'outside' of Windows, have a look at this tutorial at the link below; though I agree, "if it ain't broke don't fix it". ;)

Thanks for the replies:

@marsminar - I'm beginning to think I should leave well enough alone, but I'm such a tinkerer :)

@kado857 - I should have mentioned I ran CHKDSK without issue.

@Bare Foot Kid - I saw that posted before, and the only thing I was worried about was that I was using SP1 and I wasn't sure if the recovery CD I made will be good enough as the Win 7 DVD will not load (it recognises it is the wrong version).

But if this is basically the same scan, but without bits of Win 7 in the background mucking things up, I'll give it a try.

**I did have a thought last night but didn't verify it yet: Does CRC also take into account the file's dates? I assume it would. When I compared those speech files, there was a different created date on the HD compared to the DVD.

Also, where does Win 7 store it's checksums? Is it possible to override and say tell Windows to accept a new checksum as valid?

Create a system repair disk from the installed Windows 7 SP 1 and you'll be golden.

How to Create a Windows 7 System Repair Disc

Previous threads, Which I can't locate at the moment, have suggested the the pre-SP1 repair disk is still OK.

There's one way to find out, boot it, you'll know soon-enough! ;)

Now I think about it I have done a Windows Restore with a pre-SP1 repair disk since SP1 and a System Restore. So yes it's OK.

For the purpose of SFC, there should be no difference whether you use the pre-sp1 or the post-sp1 repair disk. Reason being that either repair disk will depend on the winsxs folder on the hard drive for good copies of files.

Well, I think I broke SFC ;)

I did a scan from the recovery CD and it came up with the same files. I had a theory that since the files I restored from the DVD didn't match date-wise with the ones in winsxs, that if I copied them into winsxs it would solve the issue.

Turns out this broke SFC. Now it stops randomly during /scannow and says it cannot perform the action.

So currently I'm trying a CHKDSK /f /r and if not, will try replacing the files into winsxs to see what happens.

Quite the learning experience for me :). I learn best when I break stuff.

Okay,

SFC runs again without issue and it's doing the same inconsistent find again:

I think I'm probably done with this now as all runs fine. Just wish I could figure out why it's so nutso?

Edit: Just looking at the list above and I noticed that ALL of the files now being reported are new - even the speech files are different speech files than the ones I replaced (those finally appear 'fixed'). So strange.

I tried one last time and did the scan 3 times from the recovery CD, and the results have become fairly consistent so I could be getting closer.

I was wondering, though, if I could get some help understanding what the notices are? Some of the files it says it can't repair because of the public key or the hashing is wrong, and others say the store file is corrupt.

Which ones should I replace from the DVD? And should I be replacing them in their location, in winsxs or both?

***EDIT***

Okay, last edit and addition. I was going through the files and looking at the information on the DVD, and I'm just not convinced these are real problems.

The two that made me wonder the most were: mspaint.exe

It runs fine on my PC, but when I compare the mspaint in Windows to the DVD, there are some minor differences: DVD version has a slightly different last modified date (it was modified 15 minutes later), and is slightly smaller.

The other was a .jpg in the Globalization folder. The picture looks perfectly fine (both version), but the files are just slightly different (one modified 1 minute after the other, both back in 2009).

I'm familiar with corrupt .jpgs, and they usually do not load fully or show strange artifacting.

Anyway, I'm about to leave this be but still wondered if there's any with more knowhow than me who could point out why these discrepancies exist?

Sorry to bump this, but the weirdest thing just happened.

I'm having trouble getting the latest .NET 3.5.1 Security Update to install and decided to run SFC to see if that would help... oddly, it found NO issues!

Computers are insane... :p

As you said in your post # 5, you are definitely a tinkerer! :)
So here's one more thing you can do to compare things. Up to this point you've been running SFC scans with mixed results. Take a system image of your machine exactly as it is right now since it appears to be working just fine. Save the system image to an external hard drive and also create the companion rescue or recovery disk just in case you can't boot into Windows.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/663-backup-complete-computer-create-image-backup.html

Now that you've got the means to restore your machine, try doing a Repair Install instead of the SFC. The SFC tries to repair/replace protected system files while the Repair Install tries to repair all files. (Your user accounts, data, programs, and system drivers should not be affected by a Repair Install.) When you're finished, run another SFC and compare that log with the log(s) made prior to the Repair Install. I'll bet you'll find even more differences.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

And if you really have a lot of time on your hands, try doing a clean install with nothing but the operating system on the hard drive. Run your SFC and compare logs again. Gradually start adding you programs, apps, etc running a new SFC after each installation. You might find that a particular program is the cause of the SFC anomalies you've been posting. There's always going to be an interdependency between programs, the operating system, and the registry which could be the reason you're seeing so many differences in the SFC logs.

Once again, if it ain't broke ... ;)

Hello JetBlack and welcome to Seven Forums.

Several years ago (back in 2000 to be exact) people were questioning Dell if SFC gave false positives. Short answer: Yes it can and presumably, still does. From a Dell forum:

System File Checker - Desktop General Hardware Forum - Desktop - Dell Community

I think the best course of action is the old axiom: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Vista and 7 actually use a different methods of keeping track of files now. They now store combinations of SHA-1 and SHA-256 in .cat and .manifest files to keep track of files.

The only false positives (not really a false positive - the hashes don't match, but changed would be a better description than corrupt) left in Vista and 7 are documented here: The SFC.exe command reports Settings.ini file errors in the CBS.log file after you add gadgets to the Windows Vista Sidebar by using the Sysprep tool and an Autounattend.xml file

I think that your SFC reading are all valid. I think the chance of it getting it wrong these days is very low.

If you want me to have a look, please copy the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder to your Desktop, right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, and upload the new file which is created on your Desktop here.

Thanks!

Richard

Wow, that is an entire summer worth of fun to keep me occupied ;)

So I did recall a couple things that changed between the SFC failures and the recent success: I replaced my generic Microsoft AHCI drivers with the Intel RST drivers for my motherboard, and I cleaned out my hidden devices in device manager (old drivers for long gone hardware). Not sure which of these, if any, fixed the issue but it's nice that it's fixed.
