Jesus. Back up to 6.24 gigs remaining.

Yes the restore points are wiped when they're a month old. I still don't know why my space kept decreasing.

Also, I have only defragmented 0NCE. I did read the tutorial.

It says to Analyze, & if it says 10%, you should fragment. Mine says it's 3% all the time though.

Go to control panel/system/system protection and look at the "configuration" button. You can adjust the amount of space used by System Restore there. Move the slider down to 5 or 10 gigs.

I don't think restore points are ever deleted according to time. They are deleted due to space available--which you can control with the slider.

3% defragmentation is typical. By default, Windows will defragment weekly. It keeps it beaten down to a low percentage-under 5% in my experience.

I have never seen fragmentation percentages above 5% in the 18 months I have used Windows 7---and I have NEVER done a manual defrag. I just use the once per week automatically scheduled defrag.

Hi BFB :) Ignat is right. Restore points are only maintained based on the amount of space available allocated for System Protection.

ignatzatsonic, hey there.

When I got rid of the restore points in CCleaner they actually were only from the month of April.

I actually turned off the scheduled defragments. I never even seen Defragmenter popup, and didn't like the idea of it running when I'm not aware. And so I disabled it.

My drive always seems to be 3%. I hope I can stop my free space from decreasing. Thanks all

Hello again.

You may want to have a look at Method Two of this tutorial at the link below, once set-up it automatically creates System Restore points on its own.

System Restore Point : Create at System Startup

I wouldn't put too much hope in being able to use older System Restore points, they become less viable as they age and even MS suggests not counting on them after about 90 days, I did have a link to a MS article on this subject but I can't find it now.

The defragmenter does not have a popup. It just runs at the scheduled time which I think is 1 am Wednesday by default, but you can change that. I would enable it and not worry about it. I never manually defrag and my fragmentation is reported as anywhere from zero to 5%. A scheduled defrag may not drive it down to zero, but so what? You'll never notice the difference.

I assume CCleaner found only April restore points because, coincidentally, your March restore points had already been deleted because there was not enough space allotted for them. I would not worry about not having a restore point from March. Normally, you want to restore to a recent restore point--the last few days usually.

But you can move that slider anywhere you want and let it occupy 200 GB if you want-----you would have restore points for a year or so---but why would you want that?

Def.

I also noticed a checkbox when I go into C:\ drive Properties.

"Compress this drive to save disk space".

Any risks in applying that ?

What does Def mean?

Compression might make the file open a little slower. I'm not sure you would notice the difference.

Risks? Not that I know of, but I'd guess compression is a complication that involves some level of risk, however small.
