Overclocking is strange. I had me RAM at 1656Mhz and got a lower score. This is with it at stock (1600Mhz) and the CPU at stock too.

To get my RAM to 1600Mhz or slightly more, here are the settings which GSkill gave me and it is stable.
CPU NB frequency: X11, 2200Mhz
CPU frequency: 200
Memory Clock: X8.00
System volt ctrl: Manual
DRAM Volt: 1.6V Specific to your RAM!
NB Volt Control: 1.40V
CPU NB VID control: +0.1V
tRFC 0,2,1,3: 160ns
If you have it, HT Volt" 1.40V
These setting are for my motherboard and the RAM I have but may be useful if your set up is very similar, no guarantees. My CPU stock speed is 3.4Ghz and I use the CPU multipier at X14. If your RAM is only rated, say, at 1333Mhz, I am unsure if it will reach 1600Mhz.

That's good, there are ways to get the RAM to run above 1333MHz, it's only a matter of patience and testing.

The problem is that it takes OC'ing skills, ok for you and other enthusiasts, difficult for others.

Glad you got it stable, was wondering if this issue may be affecting your RAM score. Agree that your system should have a better RAM score.

You might try bumping the CPU NB VID control to 1.2V or 1.3v.
Slowly, testing along the way, as usual.

The +.01V from default setting of 1.10v, so this is only 1.11v, still low for AMD integrated memory controller, with 8GB RAM it usually takes a bit more juice.

Looks like you're right about the FSB OC being worth more than the memory speed alone.

For what its worth the i7 920 is easily overclocked especially if you have a D0 revision (CPU-Z will show revision) Most hit 4ghz without having to increase any voltages, the only reason im holding back is because im still using the stock intel cooler on mine and it runs a little hot while under load beyond 3.36ghz.

The Corsair H50 CPU cooler seems to be popular choice for i7 OC'ing.

I've had my eye on one of those for some time. The H70 looks nice, too. My current cooler, the Prolimatech Megahalems, does a pretty fair job, though. Every time I think I have myself talked into the H50/H70 I end up wondering if I'd be better off with a bigger SSD, a bigger monitor, or something else. Then I end up getting "none of the above"...

Yeah, I pretty much got the Megahalems through this rather indirect logic:

1) I didn't trust the twisty screw mounting method used by the otherwise decent stock Intel cooler.
2) Figured if I was going to pay X amount of dollars for a new heat sink I might as well pay X+25 dollars and get a really good one.

I have never heard of the Intel cooler falling off anyone's MB, though. If it was a big problem I'm sure I would have heard of it. Got the Intel cooler just sitting here on a shelf.

Thanks I'm going to futz around with various settings....usually forget to go to BIOS when restarting. I'm old.

A little boost is better than nothing, I would think that it should be higher though.

The CPUZ SPD tab shows the settings tested by the manufacturer at the JEDEC standard. This is for information.
Default may be at any of the JEDEC #'s listed or the XMP, depending on the BIOS settings.

Your current RAM settings are in the memory tab.
All voltages listed for RAM in CPUZ are manufacturers recommended, not actual.

DDR3 is the newest technology and is considerably faster.

In the screen shot you posted it shows your memory as PC2-6400 which is 800mhz speed.
The reason it shows as 400 in the same shot is memory has 2 banks so its double what it shows on CPU-Z

In my previous setup I had DDR2 800mhz memory and mine scored around 6000 in winsat, so like I say yours is very good for DDR2.

It seems the average DDR2-800 (PC6400) score is between 5000 and 7000MB/s, anything higher than 7500MB/s can be considered a more-than-decent speed.. If you want something in the 5-digit range (10000+), you'll need something like the DDR2-1066 (PC8500) in dual channel.

Keep in mind that although it's nice to have nice high scores for the memory access speed, your PC will still be restricted in certain ways by other hardware (HDD, CPU, etc). For motherboards that only take DDR2, because of the other hardware you'll probably never really benefit from DDR3-class speeds anyway...


Anyways, in case anybody's interested, the Phenom II x3 740 BE that I bought doesn't like my motherboard, so I made a plan with a friend of mine to upgrade his PC and allow me to take his old CPU. So I still got a slight upgrade (5400+ to 6000+), but I can't clock this 6000+ at 200MHz core like my old proc... So my memory assessment speed is down from about 8600/8700MB/s to about 8300MB/s now.
