Was there ever a solution to the "No audio output device is installed"

I've been going on for a month without sound now. Earlier, it used to be a few times a week with sound. Stupid HP laptop.

I can't install drivers when the laptop doesn't detect the sound card. Besides, when the sound actually works, installing new drivers doesn't stop the inevitable. I've tried this before.

It's just the other way around (especially with on-board "cards") The computer wouldn't see the device until it has appropriate drivers. But when you say you tried that already...nvm

check audio is enabled in bios
(or have you got a separate sound card for laptop - what make is it? in which case you should normally disable onboard sound)

if device shows in device manager
In device manager 'disable' the audio device driver with yellow exclamation - then re-enable it. It might kick in.

Also go into audio device > driver > update driver > 'search auto for updated driver'

See if that forces a correct install

How do I go about checking it in the bios? Also, the sound category doesn't show up at all in the device manager.

EDIT: found out how. but my bios didn't say a thing about sound

It might mention connexant or realtek in the bios
Additionally it might be hidden in an advanced menu that requires a special combination of keys to be pressed to reveal

can you fill out your system specs please

try this - easier than me posting it No Sound from the Speakers in Windows 7 - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

Try downloading the Win 7 High Definition drivers direct from realtek site (but can't be certain it's right guess, cos don't know your model of computer yet!)

The sound card is conexant. I'm 100% sure of it since that's the name I saw of it before this problem started happening. I've also tried the link you posted and it just told me "Hardware changes might not have been detected" And simply refreshing device manager to see the sound card doesn't help since the sound category doesn't even show up.
