Here is a little story to add to your homework folder. The Vertex2 came out with the 34nm nand and performed very well and earned a great reputation. Somewhere around last November (when I bought mine) they changed to 22nm nand and quality suffered. They just didn't tell anyone they changed and used the same name and model #'s. There was a big blowup on the OCZ forums about it. The thing about it that some might question is--- They buy their nand from none other than Intel.

The newegg ratings reflect this problem also.

The nand/memory is Intel. The controller is Sandforce and was changed from the 34nm to 22nm not the Intel storage chips.
Went from Sandforce 1200 to 1500 series controller. I believe those are the right numbers.

Vertex2 early version. Looks like SF1227 on the controller chip.

To change the subject just a little, can someone explain why an SSD will not perform on a Dell? I have a Dell with an i3 and an H57 chipset. I've installed 2 SSds both aligned and in ahci and the best I can get is the same performance I see on a WD drive?

Can you quantify how you are measuring and checking for a change? I installed an 80GB Intel 320 series SSD into my work Dell Latitude E6400 and it made a difference that's easily measured.

There is definitely something wrong - and I do not think that it is a Dell thing. My Vertex performs as expected in my Dell Inspiron.

Yes. I aligned and formatted it at installation using diskpart. Also checked the alignment after installation and made sure it was in ahci mode in bios. I have read in places on the internet where others had the same problems with Dells, but they were usually laptops. I guess it really doesn't matter. The Dell is a "In case of emergency" computer. I'll try again later.

(Almost missed the most recent posts, this is a note on the Vertex 2/Vertex 3/Intel/whoever question.)

Hard drive manufacturers have touted all sorts of benchmarks which make their drive look "better", on paper at least. Remember the ATA 133 hype? Real world you couldn't tell the difference between that and ATA 100.

I'm with WHS on this. Instantaneous access times are the whole point of the SSD performance boost to begin with. Add in reliability as a "value" factor and the other stuff is just numbers. :)

I've always seen better access times on Intel drives, (AS SSD) 0.075/0.114 on my X25-M 120GB and 0.092/0.076 on my X25-V 40GB.

From what I've seen/read in the last few months, I'm going with the Intel drives.
If OCZ can iron out some marketing and reliability issues, I will be happy to buy one.

Intel 320 series now have a 5 year warranty.

The X25-V is now in my Dell Laptop and running very well.

AS SSD is 301, not as good as when in my desktop 340, but the specs aren't near as good either.
You might try the Intel RST drivers from Intel instead of from Dell, not sure if it will make a difference but, I've been using them for years.

Dave, I read on the Intel site that the Intel SSDs do not do idle time garbage collection. ie. idle at logon screen. Do you have any experience to dispute this? I know OCZ does do that as well as most other brands.

That's correct, Intel runs Trim differently than most others.

It's recommended to run the ToolBox once a week. It takes about a second and it's done.



Intel SSDs do not have idle time garbage collection (ITGC) or background garbage collection.
The downside to idle/background garbage collection is write amplification as it may perform unnecessary writes.
While Intel SSDs do not idle/background garbage collection, they have are very resilent to dirty pages.
If TRIM is working, you do not want/need idle/background garbage collection. For Intel G2 drives not in an array, the SSD Toolbox Optimization is a manual garbage collection (and can be scheduled). The scenario where you want/need idle/background garbage collection is SSD in RAID.

Dave, on extreme systems they have been testing SSDs. The Intel finally got to a 99% wear out, but it took 11.6TB of writes to do it. I don't think I could do that if I was trying. There is some really interesting info on how SSDs and trim actually work.

I guess that depends. The forum where they have been testing the Intel320 and X25 TRIM is kicking in as they run them.

They can watch it on a graph dip the write speed for about 5 seconds on some but about 1.5 seconds on the Intel320. Of course they are pushing terra bytes of info thru them.
So if it gets bad enough it will TRIM out or is doing it after the SSD is full.
They are filling them up so once full the TRIM may kick in.

This is the quickest at recovery by the way. OCZ is taking 5-10 seconds.

My 320 has the TRIM hang you speak of as well, but it only lasts 1.5-2 seconds. After this, the speed drops to about 39MB/s over the period of 30 seconds. During the next 30 seconds it slowly recovers to 42-43.

Amazing testing to follow.

Intel 320 is 24TB of write and down to 88% wear showing.

And people worry about putting page file on the SSD. Without a test program like they have, you couldn't write that much in 20 years. At least I couldn't.

That reminds me that the university of Karlsruhe here in Germany is just now testing a new network based on laser. The transfer rate is 36TB/sec. That could wear out our good old SSDs in a jiffy.
