I have never had a reason to go into the registry.
I also thought I was required to make a written/typed registry change.

Thanks guys I didn't realize it was drill down procedure. I always mark drills with >
for click the next item in the list.

I see where I marked in my Snip in yellow where the / format came from.
First time I realized what was intended from that notation.
Now I know! Doh!!!!


So which is the Superfetch Key in the Snip you were refering to profdlp?

I haven't installed the SSD yet.
I was trying to find out all this ahead of time so I was prepared.

Earlier today I found how to turn Superfetch back on after the Intel Toolbox turns it off.
I have no clue to what Wishmaster is saying to do.

According to his instructions, you need to right click the bottom two in your snip> Modify> change it to a 1> OK.

The only reason you would need to make these changes however, is if you let the Intel Tool box disbale Prefetch, and then later, decide you actually want it On.

Otherwise, you do not need to do this... especially if you just want it off as the toolbox suggests.

Personally, I would use it at Intel's default (Off) for a week or two before experimenting. Otherwise, how would you know whether it made a difference? If this is your first SSD you're going to be blown away by the performance boost to begin with.

Just so I don't start an argument, it would be equally valid to leave SuperFetch "On" for a week or two, then turn it "Off". Either way you'd be better able to see if it made a difference.

I've left mine "Off" since I got my SSD a year ago. I might just enable it to see what I notice.

I'll try it as installed with it off first. I just wanted to have everything figured out ahead of time.
Avoid last minute glitches as best as possible.

I was trying to get everything set up in advance.
I will try it both ways and since it will be off to start leave it off.
Turn it on later and try it.

Well, the Toolbox will only Turn it Off if you tell it too.
It will say just say System Configuration is not optimal if left On.


I leave mine On. But, as already stated, you can try it both ways.


Personally, I think its best left On. Others disagree.
And honestly, Im not sure theres a definitive right or wrong answer on the subject.

It might come down to what programs you run and how often you use them, meaning different results for different people.

My guess is that the SSD is close enough speed-wise that any gain you get from RAM speed is offset by the extra RAM being used. Of course, if you had 12GB of RAM or something you would never miss it to begin with.

I've ran my Intel SSDs with Superfetch on and off, couldn't tell any performance difference. It does get slightly better benchmarks when it's off but, that doesn't mean it's faster or slower for normal usage.
Very likely be different for other brands.
Mine is off now, just because I don't like seeing the red font in the toolbox

WHS, do your laptops have dual HD bays? I can't find one other than a custom Clevo or Alienware (both the same). I really have no intention of paying $3000 for a laptop.

My Dell Studio 1737 has two HD bays.

I've been looking at the new Dell laptops, Only Looking (in case the Minister of Finance is watching), and the Studios don't seem to have dual bays anymore. The Dell 17" XPS laptop does, specs are pretty good and it's around ~1k.

I'm sure other OEMs have dual bay laptops, just haven't looked for them. None of them seem to advertise dual bay, sometimes you have to check the HD options and guess from the listings, example: 2x750GB HD, RAID, etc.

Only the larger laptops usually have dual HD bays, for obvious reasons.

I flashed my U3S6 with the latest firmware from Station Drivers and it screwed everything up. Took about 4 minutes to boot. Went back to older version, same problem. Decided to go back to onboard SATA II port and the MSAHCI driver. The result is OK but this is the 2nd card that's failed on me. When I first got the speeds were incredible.
I was waiting on Bulldozer before getting a new MOBO but after this I might just bite the bullet and do it. Having said that, the drive performs great on the SATA II port.

Hi Mike, Sorry I was not fast enough to answer your questions. But I am on Central European Time now and was asleep. But it looks like you got all the help required.

I myself do not use the toolbox because both my Intels are Gen1 models and the toolbox does not support those. I find it strange that the toolbox messes with the registry. But changing the value in the specified key is pretty simple. You might consider to backup the registry - at least the string in question ( http://windowsxp.mvps.org/registry.htm ) or image the whole system before you start messing with it - especially since you are not a registry pro.
