i've had my laptop just over a year now...

it's a toshiba satellite

470gb hdd
4gb ram
2.3 ghz processor

i've been downloading heaps of movies and stuff and the hdd was nearly full. tonight i got a message saying it was low on memory.

i have windows 7 home premium. what could i / should i do to the computer to make it run better?

I would recommend dumping your rarely used files onto an external hard drive. If you carry your laptop around a lot and feel the need to have most of your files with you as well, you can get an external drive that runs just off of USB power.

Newegg.com - Computer Hardware, Hard Drives, External Hard Drives

As for your memory warning, what were you doing at the time? Or was it a storage warning?

Thanks for that. I have sent most of it to a external. And i deleted most of the files tonight so there's almost 300gig available now. It wasn't a storage warning as there was still 65gig available at the time.

I assume the message pertained to RAM rather than to disk space. Next time you get the message look into Resource Monitor > Memory tab and take a snip of the colored bar. Then post that snip. It is possible that you have a program that is bleeding.

Looks like another of those high quality (and usually totally useless) OEM programs,

KeNotify - KeNotify.exe - Program Information

As to whether there is any actual benefit from it only Toshiba can tell you. Disable it on the Startup tab in msconfig and see if anything stops working. If not then you will have stopped the error and freed up a bit of resources in the process.

I did some research today (busy with finals all week, sorry), and KeNotify has come up as a common problem that generates this low memory warning arbitrarily (some would get it using 40% memory). You will be just fine without it :)

The guy in the shop is right. Only very few specicial applications (e.g. CAD) would make use of the extra RAM.
