I am not sure what is going on, but when I open word 2007 it opens like it has been magnified. All of the tabs and even the start bar are huge while the program is running. If I minimize it, the desk top icons are also huge. When I clost the program everything goes back to normal size. I checked and the zoom is at 100% so its not that. None of the other office programs are doing this.

Open Word > Office button > bottom right, click Words Options > left column, click Resources > click " Run Microsoft Office Diagnostics "
See if it can help fix the problem.

I tried that but it turned up no errors.

It is really a strange thing. When I open word, the screen goes black for a second first. It also goes black for a second when I close word.

Sounds like when you launch an Office 2k7 program it is changing the resolution of your display. Not sure why it would be doing this, but to see if that is the case you can check your resolution with Word closed, then open Word, minimize it and check your resolution again. If my theory is correct it will be set much lower.
I will poke around the interwebs and see if anyone else is experiencing this.

The problem was resolved by unchecking the box that says run in 640 x 256 in the properties dialog box.
