When I got a Win7 computer from Dell, McAfee was already installed.
How can I change the sequence of the booting order of startup programs.
For example, I would like to place McAfee proram at the end of the booting sequence for the startup programs. hummer

I am not aware of any setting or third-party program that allows you co choose the order in which the startup programs are run at boot time. If anyone knows, I would be very interested.

That said, any anti-virus program has their internal settings that affect their behavior at boot time. For example my NOD32 is set to do an automatic startup file check at boot time and user logon. One can turn that off and gain maybe a second, maybe few seconds of boot time. But the security drawback is huge, so I would never recommend meddling with that.

Now, the above example makes me think that the anti-virus is being loaded in the very beginning of the boot sequence, otherwise it won't be able to do anything useful at boot time.

There is no need for extra software. Just do a delayed startup (by a few seconds). You can do that in e.g. Services (Properties of the service). If you happen to have WinPatrol, it is even easier.

The extra software was for changing the sequence of startup items. I don't think natively that you can do this without the software.

I do NOT recommend changing the start order when dealing with your anti-virus program, in this case, McAfee. There is very sound reasoning behind having the anti-virus software up and running BEFORE anything else.

For absolute best performance uncheck all Startup items except AV and gadgets in msconfig>Startup. Only let in those you can't do without starting up with Win7. Startup Programs - Change

For even better performance replace the MucAfee bloatware with lean lightweight MSE or Avast 6.

The only trouble with msconfig is that it doesn't show all startup items...

I stopped using startup managers like WinPatrol because they add to Startup time and can have issues.

Best to just turn off everything except AV and gadgets unless there's one or two others you can't wait to startup when needed. Win7 performance will show its appreciation.

Agreed. When I went from Mcafee to MSE, MSE even found a Trojan missed by Mcafee.
If you do switch, be sure to use the uninstall tool provided by Mcafee.

Sometimes you will find that you also need to also let the synaptics touchpad driver install.

Greg has given you some excellent advice. If you would like you can use the following procedure and we can look at precisely what msconfig shows as starting.

LIST OF STARTUP PROGRAMS USING CCLEANER

CCleaner | Tasks icon | Startup tab | click on Save to text file button (bottom right side)

Using the PAPER CLIP icon in the top panel of a Message Reply window, attach the .txt file generated by CCleaner.

Each to their own of course Greg. I've used WP for years and suffered only one minor glitch with a particular update. Otherwise it's always saved me far more boot time than it costs. When I installed Soluto (for a looksee) it calculated that WP added under two seconds. It suits me because it delivers the volume of starts I require in 44 seconds, whereas Windows/msconfig is over a minute.

I have to agree. I use it all the time (the pro version) and never had a problem. I like it especially for easy of delaying startups. Besides it is a good watchdog.

If you have no startups besides AV and gadgets, which gives best performance, why would you need WinPatrol or Soluto? To delay System services?

Just askin.

I know this is an old thread, but my question is related. I want to have my wireless start sooner (but after Malwarebytes and MSE), as it seems to be the last thing.
I installed WinPatrol (free) and see the list. I can see how to move to delayed start, but not how to move an item up in the list to be sooner.
