I checked my email today and opened an email from someone I know but it was a bad email. When I went to shut down I noticed my desktop background looked different and on the bottom right it says Windows 7 Build 7600 THis copy of Windows is not genuine. SO, now I am thinking that email gave me a virus but I am not sure. I have not done anything. I also received a yellow triangle message that said "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting." I don't know if that is the virus trying to get my information or what to do. I am running Malwarebytes now. I do not have anti-virus software installed.

Welcome
Dont panic we can correct this
Make sure that the Malwarebytes scan if updated and the full scan
Download Microsoft Security Essentials and make a full and updated scan
Then
Go to the computer icon and right click. Do you see a genuine activation sticker in the lower right? If so you are activated.
If not, try to activate now. If you cant, you will be given a number to call, it will be worked out.

As a member just trying to help, if this is a virus it is due to the fact that you do not have an antivirus.. Even with so many great free ones.

Thanks Richard. I activated by phone first then installed security essentials, doing full scan now. Malwarebytes found no threats.

If you now have that activtion emblem, that I mentioned and you are clean with both Malwarebytes and Security Essentials, you should be ok
Because you did not have an anti virus, here are my guidelines to protect your expensive investment.

To maintain your computer

10 Tips on How to Properly Maintain Your Computer

Steps that I did not notice on the guide include:

Running a scan disc before doing a defrag

Using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes.

Making System Restore points, at least once a week

Makaing a system Image once a month (varies by user)

Not relying on your A/V common sense, should prevail. You know of many sites can cause a problem.

Do not use any reg cleaning or optimizing software.

Download and use Ccleaner about once every two months. Untick any registry entries.
Piriform - Download CCleaner, Defraggler, Recuva, Speccy - Millions of users worldwide!

If you follow these instructions, you will be trouble free for a long time to come.

Be sure to back up your hard drive about once a month (varies by user) and to keeep system restore points up to date.

I am not sure what you mean about clicking on the computer icon and right clicking and looking for an activation icon. Can you show me or explain further. My full scan showed no threats.

I would be happy to explain'

On your desktop you should have a compter icon
Just right click on it
Then click on properties
You should be on the page that gives you information about your computer.
In the bottom right, you will see a Microsoft Emblem, that says something to the effect genuine.
If you do not have the icon, go to search, type computer and right click on that, then properties.
