Can not get to Login

I have had a serious problem with my 2 month old PC and it just will not work. I have not installed any new software or done anything to prompt it to stop working.

When I turn the laptop on I it starts to load up, I see the windows logo and before it gets to the screen where I can select users, the screen goes black. If I wait a few minutes the mouse clicker appears, and then a few minutes later if I try to move the mouse the screen dims.

The start up repair brings back nothing and the system restore only has one restore point from a few days ago and that does not work.


When I check the startup repair "view diagnostic and repair details" all of the results are complete successfully.

I have run a checkdisk on the C: drive and that has not helped.

Anyone got a suggesting for a fix to this specific problem? I have seen lots of similar but not identical problems and the fixes for them have not seemed to work.

I am no technical wizard, if you have an explination I would really appreciate it in simpleton terms, but if you don't have time for this, I will look up your answer

Just want to remind of this....... your warranty is still fresh, don't hasitate to use it if you are unable to receive a resolution.

Hi,

You can use a system file check to examine and fix system files:
sfc /scannow
wait for the outcome, if errors are reported it can be run a second time to see if there are less errors after the second scan.

As your Windows seems to be without SP1 - have you set automatic updates ?



Have you set update automatically check for the latest drivers and icons, here's how: (from Windows help)

1. Open Devices and Printers.
   Right-click the name of your computer, and then click Device installation settings.
2. Click Yes, do this automatically (recommended), and then click Save changes. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
   If Yes is already selected, click Cancel to close the dialog box.

I run the sfc /scannow but it says there is a system repair pending which requires I reboot to complete and then run it again. I cannot just reboot my pc as I only seem to get the option to get to the System recovery options window when I forcefully turn the pc off with the power button, when I do that it does not seem to register and it gives me the same message when I type sfc /scannow again.

For the second point, can I do that without being to get to the desktop?

At the moment I am restricted to - startup repair, system restore, system image recovery, windows memory diagnostic, command prompt, dell factory image restore.

did u have a disk with the newish laptop for video drivers as such can u get into safe mode

It seems so far the only solution is a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html.

Your Windows 7 installation seems to be before SP1 so a slipsteamed with SP1 installation DVD could do the trick:

(The slipstreaming could be done on another computer)
