Forgive me if I'm posting this in the wrong section, and forgive me again for jumping right in and whining about my problems on my first post.

Anywho, I've had nothing but problems with Windows 7 since upgrading from Vista, wasn't too thrilled about Vista either I might at. First and foremost has been constant crashes with flashplayer. I've tried installing, reinstalling..almost everything possible I've read online and eventually gave up and got used to restarting my computer every time I went to a flash-heavy website.

Second problem - which I can't live with - Windows 7 failed to boot. I read a few tutorials here with my phone, but had no luck getting it to work. I finally tried something I didn't see mentioned. The last, or second-to-last option on the safe mode screen allowed booting with unscripted files (I think, not sure exactly what it said) but it allowed my computer to at least start like normal.

The first thing I got was a message saying some kind of .net framework file was missing or corrupted, I had no internet, nothing would load, and it was so slow. So from there I followed the instructions on how to do a clean repair install and went through everything again. After three tries, all 30 minutes long each, windows still failed to auto correct the problem. So I used the same safe-mode option from earlier and got back up and running. Only this time I didn't get the .net error and am able to load programs and the internet works.

But the problem is every time I restart I have to boot in the aforementioned safe mode. I feel as though I shouldn't have to do this, and I don't know what to do.

I should also mention the computer is ~2 years old, was upgraded from Vista to Windows 764bit with some upgrade disc from HP. I don't have a real version of the Windows disc.

I know that is a long post, but I wanted to get enough information out as possible while my computer is working....I'd hate to write all of that with my phone.

Thank you,
-Maaso

Hm - sounds like you have a few things going on there, and all of them are likely around some sort of driver issue. If you have to disable driver signing and boot in safe mode for it to boot, you most definitely have a driver issue. Upgrades from Vista, while possible, aren't really something most of us here would recommend unless that Vista installation was fresh and as untouched (software and driver-wise) as possible. Unfortunately, once you're at this point, upgrading drivers is almost impossible from safe mode given how safe mode works.

Do you happen to have your data on a different drive/partition, and have it backed up somewhere if it isn't? It might be best to do a clean installation of Windows 7 with that HP disc if possible, and then update the drivers to the latest versions on the HP site for your hardware as soon as that is finished to get out of this mess.

How would one do a clean install with the HP disc? I put it in and clicked for it to run setup...seems all it does it does is make noise from the CD-ROM drive.

All right, I did all of that and I believe the clean install went smoothly.

Now it's telling me to put in a user name and password.

I've never had a password on my computer and have never set one up. How would one go about getting past this?

Hard to say - if you weren't asked for a password during install, there's not an easy way short of figuirng out where in the unattend.xml file on the DVD that came from. It might make sense to reinstall clean again and pay close attention to each step to see if this happens again.

How do I reinstall without being logged on or have a way to access the program form the screen I'm on?

I think you are talking about the Option to create one

You can fill out user name but do not have to enable a password it is up to you

I hope you understood what i am meaning

If it is an HP Win7 Upgrade kit Installation DVD it should boot to do the clean install, which is what you want with the kind of corruption you describe.

Boot the DVD by setting it first to boot in BIOS setup, or by tapping at boot the one-time BIOS Boot menu key which is F12 on HP.

Adapt the steps to get a Perfect Reinstall in my signature below to get it perfect.

Let us know if there are any further problems.

Well, I believe I've made some more progress; I'm under the impression I clicked upgrade instead of the custom(advanced) option. Right now it's in the "Installing Windows..." screen and is 24% done Expanding Windows files.

I'm still a bit hesitant though, because I clicked to format the partition and I don't think it formatted everything. On the tutorial it shows that the disk shows the disk name as "Disk 0 Unallocated space" On mine it said "Disk# Windows 7."

But so far everything is matching the screenshots shown on the tutorial, so here is to hoping everything I did everything correctly this time.

You should not have had the option for Upgrade install (only Custom) if you booted the DVD.

Your Disk will not necessarily read the same as the tutorial's. The installer only does a quick format. I prefer to delete, re-create the partition and format.

Well, everything was going well....

Then the battery died! Now it tries to boot up and the screen flashes then pops up a window that says "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and the restart the installation."

So I clicked "OK" and it keeps coming back to this error. So I decided to start over like before; by changing the boot to look at the optical drive first and boot from the CD like before. But its not working, it's not giving me the option to "press any key to boot from CD or DVD." It just goes right into trying to start Windows and back to this error screen, and the BIOS is defaulting back to the hard drive as it's first boot option.

Try cleaning the Windows DVD & DVD drive.

You should not have been able to even proceed with the installation on battery power. Even so, it is careless.

If cleaning the DVD and drive doesn't help, reset the CMOS: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

Try booting DVD using one-time BIOS boot key given on first screen.

Use free Partition Wizard bootable CD which will autostart to Wipe the HD, then DVD should autostart too.

If these fail, confirm ISO integrity and burn another DVD using ImgBurn at 4x speed. If retail DVD, extract it's ISO using UltraISO trial version to write to bootable flash stick: On file tab Open DVD, on Bootable tab Write Disk Image, Format, Write. Boot under USB or HD's.

Well lads, work beckoned so I wasn't able to get on yesterday. But I'm happy to say I'm typing this from my computer!

I'm not sure what I did - but whatever it was - I must've did it right because this thing finally booted from the optical drive.

I wish I knew more about computers so I could give back to the forum somehow...because I feel a simple "thank you" isn't enough to express how grateful I am to you lads. But I mean it, thank you very much for all the help and patience you all have shown me. If any of you ever find yourself in Kansas, and in need of some gunsmithing done, I'll be happy to oblige any way I can.

Again, thank you.
