Epson Perfection 1640SU - Driver Problem

The only problem I have is with the automatic document feeder (adf). The problem is not the adf itself, it is the scan results. When I scan several pages (e.g. A4) the first page has the right format but the second page not. The borders are cut to almost half of the size of the document. I tried different applications with the adf, but always the same result. I checked all settings and tried to set the paper size bofore the scanning process. But I had no luck.

I tried VueScan too. With VueScan I can scan several pages with the adf without this size problem. But before I pruchase VueScan. Does anybod know this problem and have a solution? Is there another setting I have to change in the drivers .inf before installing the driver?

Thankyou so much! I also have an Epson Perfection 1640SU scanner. I was almost resigned
to not getting it to work under Win.7 64bit, as the Epson site did not provide a Win.7
64 bit driver for it. (The 32 bit ver driver did not work). Your solution of modifying
the ES27.inf file worked perfectly! For others the download link that pcspecialist
provided to epson is no longer valid. However just go to the epson.com site and search
for:
epson12180.exe. Download it and click on it to start it. At the install window choose
to extract the files.
Once files are extracted do not continue with the installation. First go to:
C:/EPSON/epson12180_twain_driver_and_epson_scan_utility_304a.
Navigate there and find and open the ES27.ini file by clicking on it. Notepad opens.
Find the three instances of the USB\VID_04B8&PID_011B and replace with USB
\VID_04B8&PID_010A and save and close the file.
Now go to Device Manager. Find it by going to the start button and clicking on help.
Search for Device manager. Open Device Manager. Find Imaging Devices. There will be
your scanner that is not working. Right click on it and choose update driver and
software. Browse to c:/EPSON/epson12180_twain_driver_and_epson_scan_utility_304a and
select that folder. Let it run to install.
Now go to Control panel/Hardware and Sound/Devices and Printers. You will find an icon
for the Epson Perfection 1640 scanner there. Right click on the icon. Select start
scan. And you are in business!
If you like right click on the icon and select create shortcut. This will place a
shortcut to the scanner on your desktop, which is more convenient to access. I also
created a folder in My Pictures/Epson Perfection scanner to save my scans to. Remember
for each scan to select .jpg or .bmp and then Preview. Then you can use your mouse to
close crop to the preview image before doing the final scan. Once scan is done, type in
an appropriate file name for your scan and save it.
Thanks again to pcspecialist, this saved a trip to buy a new scanner.

I was able to modify the Epson Perfection 2400 Photo driver to work with my 1640SU under Windows 7 x64.
Here's the driver: Epson America, Inc. - Downloading File Page

Open it with 7-Zip (or whatever you use), extract the file named _winzip_, extract the files contained in _winzip_ using 7-Zip (or whatever you use).

Open Es27.inf and replace all instances of USB\VID_04B8&PID_011B with USB\VID_04B8&PID_010A and save and close the file.

Now go to the Device Manager, right click your scanner, Update Driver and Software...
Browse my computer..... and use the folder you extracted _winzip_ (with the now modified Es27.inf) to.

That should do it, worked great for me.

I have an Epson Perfection 1640SU and its still in good working order. So, to toss it into the waste bin simply because of a driver is nonsense.

I am curious though, how does the changing of the 011B to 010A change anything?

Same problem here... tried the suggested solution, but it didn't work... Should I dump my scanner now? Shouldn't I have been installing a 64bit OS at all? Seems the Windows world still isn't quite there, my MacBook works fine with 64bit OS

Edit: There is a solution, though it costs: VueScan from VueScan 9 Scanning Software for Windows 7, Mac OS X (Snow Leopard) and Linux
And to relativate the MACOS statement: I have to use the same there

Easier solution -- if you have VISTA 32 bit or an XP system why not run the scanner in a Virtual Machine --I do this for a Canon LIDE scanner.

You don't have any problems either sharing the files between your Host OS and the VM so no probs acessing your scanned data.

Saves mucking about with dubious drivers -- and your VM only needs to be a small say 512 MB or 768 MB VM.

Vmplayer is FREE from vmware -- For just this type of application I wouldn't bother with XP mode (in any case you'd have to have at least W7 pro to install it).

Read the tutorials in the Virtualisation section on how to set up a VM -- it's much easier than you think and very useful too for other stuff.

Especially in these economic times why chuck out perfectly good functioning hardware if you can make it work on the new OS easily -- the vm solution does that PERFECTLY.

I accept the solution of messing around with the driver worked - but if you Upgrade / re-install your W7 system again you'll have to do the same thing and it might not work.

It's a get around but I am not really in favour of fiddling around and hacking these pieces of Software to get something to work when the Native driver works fine under the OS it was designed for.

The Virtual Machine solution without change will continue to work even if you run the VM on a LINUX host !!!. You can run the VM on ANY supported Host too.

I use my scanner very infrequently but there are times when its needed and the copies must be clear and sharp, hence the purchase of the Epson Perfection 1640SU.

I sometimes run my XP Virtual Machine with the scanner software even on a tiny ASPIRE 1 NETBOOK (although I upgraded the netbook to 2 GB RAM).

If your VM isn't doing a lot of processiing the CPU usage is negligible - especially on modern machines.

What VM's tend to gobble up is RAM but a 512 MB XP VM your scanner software etc will run just fine -- the driver will work 100% correctly and your images will be clear and sharp just as they would have been on the original REAL machine.

Also when you've finished just shut down the VM.

I've had ZERO issues with either VMWARE PLAYER or WORKSTATION. The Free vmware player is what you probably need if your requirements are basically scanning plus the software.

As I said sharing the data with the REAL machine is no prob so importing scans etc into WORD or whatever is not a problem -- and in any case you could even run things like Paperport / MS Office etc on your XP machine as well to make it even easier to integrate your documents.

To share printing just treat your vm machine as another separate machine on the network or simply print the documents from your REAL W7 machine.

I had the same problem with the ADF (first page OK, but from the second page on: big "margins"), but I found a workaround.

Just follow pcspecialist's workaround (see beginning of this thread) and only change the following things:

• Find the file to download here: ftp://ftp.epson.com/drivers/epson12203.exe (it's another driver file from Epson's ftp-site)
• In the file Es0d.inf, you need to change the string USB\VID_04B8&PID_0107 into USB\VID_04B8&PID_010A (you will find it three times; in fact you will only need to change the last "7" into "A")
• The scanner you will see has now become the Epson Expression 1600

I hope this all is clear to you. I found this while digging out the workaround that pcspecialist found!

I just want to inform you that I use my scanner Epson Perfection 1640 SU including ADF several times a week and, since my previous post, everything is working 100% fine.

I wouldn't call this workaround "mucking with dubious drivers" or "fiddling around", because the only thing PCSpecialist and I have done, was make Windows 7 believe that we're working with another resembling Epson scanner instead of the Perfection 1640SU we really use!

But feel free to use and share other solutions! As long as you can continue working with your scanner!

I would like to keep my Epson Perfection 1640SU Scanner and therefore i would like to know how to install the proper driver. The Epson sites only provides an stone-old Vista 32 Bit driver. The driver installs without any message, and i even can select the Scanner in the Twain Menu in my Paint Program, but when pressing on the startbutton then comes "An error occures while trying to open the Data Source". Hardware Manager says "No Driver installed"....I'm gettin' mad...

I am using Windows 7 PRO - 64Bit (full, no RC) and need a little help from you.

From where I am sitting you can indeed label this thread as solved. My OS is Win7 Ultimate therefore I can download and use the WinXP Mode, which I did.

Since then, by that I mean roughly a month ago now, I have not only been using my Epson Perfection 1640SU scanner with 32 bit drivers downloaded from the Epson website, but I have also been using several other softwares for which the manufacturers have refused to make x64 bit drivers.

My sincere thanks to all who responded and assisted me with this problem.

The above did the trick for my EPSON Perfection 1640 SU photo.

It was previously free software but nowadays they want money.
I asked EPSON Germany for a key since this software was part of the delivery when I got my EPSON scanner.
But they insist that the producer of that software is some external supplier and that I have to talk to them.
That is very bad support from EPSON.

I'm also trying to install an Epson Perfection 1640SU on a Windows 7 (Home Edition) 64 bit system. I tried the supplied hack in this thread and got the scanner to recognize (as the 2400 model mentioned). I can now use the Epson Scan software for the 2400 by itself or via the "Import" option in Photoshop. However - I can't get the Epson Scan software to recognize the negative scanner hardware on the scanner.

"Film" is a scan option in the Professional scan tab in the software but it is grayed out (unable to select). Is that because the 2400 scanner doesn't have a negative scanner attachment?

I applied the same hack / process and tried a negative film scan with the special lid. It worked perfectly for me. In fact I had scanned previously the same film with the Epson twain/smart panel 32bit and the result seems to look better with this new "faked" driver. Maybe a matter of better default settings ?

I hope this will help toher people decide : yes the negative lid works fine with the modified driver.
And of course many thanks to the creator and participants to this extemely helpfull and money saving thread !

I have had the same problem with my Perfection 1640SU and the 2400 driver highlighted by pcspecialist also worked for me. As a result I have tweaked the .inf to correctly identify the 1640SU as well as the 2400. Credit for the original solution goes to pcspecialist. Why Epson can't do this is still a mystery.

In case anyone else wants a copy of this I have uploaded it to the web. Instructions:

(1) Download the Epson Perfection 2400 Photo driver
(2) Run the exe and select 'Unzip'. When 'EPSON Scan Setup' comes up don't continue - leave the setup running and go to step (3).
(3) In your browser go to http://www.shlock.co.uk/Utils/EPSON/Es27.inf. Depending on your browser either download to - or save this file as - C:\EPSON\epson12180_twain_driver_and_epson_scan_utility_304a\Es27.inf (not .txt!).
(4) Return to the EPSON Scan Setup and continue to install as an 'Epson Perfection 2400'.
(5) Go to Device Manager, right click your scanner, Update Driver and Software...
Browse my computer..... and enter or browse to: C:\EPSON\epson12180_twain_driver_and_epson_scan_utility_304a
(6) The scanner driver should install and identify your scanner as an EPSON Perfection 1640SU.

This trick has worked perfectly for me in Windows 7 x64 for the last 3 years but now I have upgraded my system to Windows 8 x64 and the scanner doesn´t work again.

Does anybody know how to make the "EPSON Perfection 1640SU" scanner work in Windows 8?

My scanner is like new and has very good resolution. It would be a pitty that I couldn' t use it anymore.

I have just switched to Win 7x64 and was annoyed that Epson could not provide a driver for my Scanner.
