Solved HELP! User profile service failed the login - profile cannot be loaded

I followed the tutorial here http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/87555-user-profile-change-default-location.html and it worked beautifully... All my user docs are on the D drive and the Start button entires all point to the new location.

HOWEVER when I tried to log in this mornias wand was faced with my normal log in prompt for a password to my profile, it accepted it, and then told me "The user profile service failed to login. User profile cannot be loaded.

It's the only account, so I cannot get in via another account.

I assume it's looking for something on the D drive instead of the C drive (or vice versa) ... But I carefully followed the tutorial. I assume one registry setting is off. ProfileImagePath???

I can only now get in via F8 options. I tried safe mode, but there is no regedit in safe mode And it won't let me create a new account .

I can rebuild yet again (win 7 has not been kind to me) but not sure if my last image was before or after the user profile change

Are there other boot f8 boot options to get me out of the jam??

Via the help panel I can now get into regedit.... But now what?

I looked at steps 10 to 14 on the tutorial and I have the correct registry setting, ie ProfileImagePath pointing to D:\users\media

So is there another registry item to change?

The ProfilesDirectory key says %systemdrive%\users. Should it be changed to d:\users??

The tutorial went on to say I could delete my c:/users/media folder....which I have not done yet, so I don't thinks it's that.

As a temporary measure I
- changed the ProfileImagePath to D:\Users
- recopied my C:\users\media to D:\users\media



That got me into my profile, which works well, HOWEVER things are still not right overall:

• in Control Panel users, I dont see an option to add a new user
• if I search for Create at the Start button, I can see a link that function, so I created and Admin and a Guest account right away
• But they dont show up in Control Panel/Users
• And I do not see there subdirectories under D:\Users ( or C:\Users

So something is off here.

If I swtich Users, I indeed see the icons for them, but if I select them, I get same user profile service error.

Hopefully this will be an easy fix. I really like having the my data off the C drive on on the D drive - and have all the start button and folder functions point to the right areas on D: .. its a nice setup...just want to me able to log in easily

Some times a reboot will fix these types of things. I'm presuming you are the administrator. Hang in their, their will others wiser than me to help.

Its just that I have yet not had 24 hours of trouble-free use with Win 7. Big mistake to convert form Vista - lost so many hours - and its still not right after 5 or 6 complete clean reinstalls (for all different reasons). I have had zero issues with my other Dell that came with Win 7). Just a bad combination of circumstances I guess.

Rebooting helped in terms of what appears to ne proper slt setup Admin and Guest account - dont get those errors now. And they did show up on the D drive.

But for every problem fixed, and new one comes up.

Now I am having AppData problems ..which of course is directly tied to moving the \Users folder.

For example, I cant use Outlook send/receive in outlook any more. I get the error attached, whih I goggled and it ties to App Data files

I hope I am not going to have to reisntall every app now. Especially Office with its million updates, but I likely have no choice.

Moving the \Users is a lot more complicated that the tutorial suggested. I will stick with it though ; I hope I am almost there....

1) How does one confirm (in a command windows or via windows), the current values for these parameters/variables:

%LOCALAPPDATA
%PUBLIC
%APPDATA


2) How does one change them?

Are you logged as administrator. One that really don't understand is a shut down and the restart works better than a reboot sometimes. Some that use hibernate/sleep to save a few seconds in their life cycle have that problem. A reboot/restart lets Windows 7 complete it's assigned task. When Windows 7 has (wait while xxxx) don't touch or do anything. Mouse, keyboard.

I used the SET command in a DOS windows, and checked all the "\USERS" or profile related items.... they all look good, ie

I manually changed all the remaining hard coded references in the registry from C:\USERS... to D:\USERS....

I will reboot to see if the outlook error is still there...

I am always logged in as administrator.

Rebooted, and still get the permission error above on Outllok 2003.

Running out of ideas prior to a reisntall....

I don't think another install will be necessary. Are we talking about Outlook that comes with Windows Office. If so, have you activated the program with Microsoft? Windows 7 does not have Outlook Express. Many of us use Windows Live Mail.

Great link, and great tutorials. Very clear, helpful and informative. You are correct - they are additive.... but it was one of those turorials that got me into my current little issue .. I'm not finding fixing it so 'simple'.

Yes Outl0ok 2003 from MS Ofice Professional 2003. Activated a few days back... snd working fine to date.

1) Heres another clue... On this forum, I sign in and click Rremember me. It of coruse lets me in. I close IE9, and open it again...and it asks me to sign in. So something is not going wehre it should.

2) I also renamed C:\Users to C:\Users_OLD to make sure nothing is still going to C:\Users. After a reboot, I can can the revised name in :
-a command window, and
-in a Windows, Properties, Sharing

.... but it still shows as Users in

-Windows explorer and
-Windows, Properties, General

Behavior getting weird. Every time I try to download an exe, it changes for .exe to _exe

I think next step is to copies data files , delete my main profile, and create a new one.

The only flaw here is that I am not confident I have a good set of "default user" files.

Is there a way to easily create a default user set of files??? ?

If things like exe. are changing to anything. My thoughts are; when things change without my permission I get worried. I would run scan anti virus scans. Also scans with Malwarebytes Anti Malware and Super Anti Spyware updated.
What anti virus and firewall are you using?

i had this very problem the other day ,the user profile service service failed and would not load profile.
