I keep hearing of this Super PI test thing on various forums so I decided to look into it to see what it's all about, from wiki -

Super PI is used by many overclockers to test the performance and stability of their computers. In the overclocking community, the standard program provides a benchmark for enthusiasts to compare "world record" pi calculation times and demonstrate their overclocking abilities. The program can also be used to test the stability of a certain overclock speed. If a computer is able to calculate pi to the 32 millionth place after the decimal without mistake, it is considered to be moderately stable in terms of RAM and CPU. However, longer tests with other CPU/RAM intensive calculation programs will run for hours instead of minutes and may better stress system stability. While Super PI is not the fastest program for calculating pi (see software for calculating π for faster alternatives), it remains very popular in the hardware and overclocking communities.

Lol, was running the 32M test and thinking "boy is mine slow compared to yours". Then I saw you ran the 1M test

Still slow, but i5 750 at 3.373GHz throught test

Here are some historical numbers for comparison:

A Pentium 90 from about 1995 takes about 35 minutes


Pentium 3 733, 3 minutes 42 seconds

P4 2.26 GHz: 1 minute 18 seconds

3.2 Northwood circa 42 seconds

stock 2.13 E6400 Conroe takes about 23 seconds

stock Conroe E6600 circa 21 seconds and 17 seconds when overclocked to 3 ghz

PC world record may 24, 2006, 11.359 seconds with a Conroe 2.66 overclocked to 4.470

i5-2500 at stock clock: between 10 and 11 seconds

i5 750 @ 4300mhz 9.59


i5-2500k @ 4.2 around 8.8 seconds

2600K @ 5.5Ghz, 6.786 seconds

_just_ beat that time @ 5154MHz though with an i5 2500k. I have a shoddy clocking CPU compared to many but it's amazing to see how much the times have come down by in the last decade and a half!

Thanks for the welcome. Did not keep the CPU at that speed for too long due to the voltage being required. Need this chip to last at least 2 years.

I'll try and help as many people out with hardware and overclocking as possible.

Yeah, I only up mine for benchmarks, it's currently running at 4ghz which keeps it nice and cool and the voltage down.

I agree.
My previous HP PC with a P4 and 1Gig RAM would have probably went to sleep or died of exhaustion before it finished running the benchmark.

Post your Super PI 1M Times

I did a Super PI test with Win 7 Permon running and noticed that it's a single threaded process in 32 bit environment...not a very good tool to be used on multiCPU x64 architecture which is what the new generation of PC's are.

For a CPU benchmark app, it doesn't test the overheads in multiCPU arctitectures, nor does it test the raw capacity because the test runs in a 32 bit subsystem on a 64 bit CPU which will have its own overheads (And the overheads wouldn't have a linear relationship with the number of similar processes runnig.

Also I noticed that the tests writes 3MB/sec of data during the execution.

So I'll be lookng for a similar CPU intensive 64 bit application running variable threads (depending on the number of CPU's). If some oneknows a good free benchmark utility...I'd love to get my hands on it. Thanks.

Now for the results I obtained:
Super PI version : mod1.5 XS

Data rate written during tests: 3MB/sec .
1M test result : 10.793S
32M test result : 10m 04.208s

PC details : CPU : I7 2600 3.4GHz

M'board : Gigabyte G1 Sniper2 rev 1.0
System disk (affects performance results due to data writes):OCZ revodrive3 X2 .
