Connecting laptop to desktop

Hi, what is the best and simple way of connecting a laptop to a desktop directly? My requirement is that I need to transfer a data folder from a laptop to a desktop and then reinstall Win 7 on laptop.

Get an external USB disk and copy from laptop and transfer to desktop.

Or just keep the data on external USB disk and install the windows 7 on laptop and copy back the data. Probably this is the easiest way for your requirement.

For your kind of requirement there is no need to connect the laptop to the desktop.

I do not have a external hard disk and I need to connect the laptop directly to the desktop with some kind of a cable. Can you suggest some types of cable?

You can also use an easy transfer cable.

USB networks are possible but a nightmare to set up, usually unstable and the speeds make them pretty pointless.

Werty, this doesn't have to be difficult. Use a thumb drive. If you don't have one, you can get a very good one for less than $15.

True Vince a USB thumb drive can be very useful depending on the ammount of data to be backed up, a crossover cable can be picked up for about £2 which is less than $4 and the data can be transferred in one go and is only limited by the size of the drive on the destination machine (my preferred method).

Transferring the files through network (crossover cable) can be limited to the network speed (10mb/s, 100mb/s or 1Gb/s). A thumbdrive would be a good solution if werty can not get a USB HDD.

Use the network you already have. If you are already connected to the same router as the PC via wireless, you just have to share the files no need for network cables and USB sticks.
