BSOD on starting Windows

I have a Toshiba L655 -183 with Win 7 Home Premium 64bit laptop with Intel i5 460m , 4GB Ram, 500GB HDD & A Ti Radeon HD 5650 graphics card . I am not so conversant with computers but ill try my best to give as much information as possible. Anyway up until a few weeks ago i could run the laptop fine then i installed AVG antivirus 2012 and i started getting BSOD everytime i start up and immediately after the windows logo . The BSOD would always blame it on the graphics card . Anyway after a few days searching it seemed the antivirus was at fault so i uninstalled it using the AV uninstaller as guided although this seemed to have no effect.( I also installed MSE ) So fully frustrated i finally formatted the laptop and installed a clean copy of win 7 64bit Ultimate .(hoping it would erase any traces of the whatsoever damage i had done. The first drivers i installed after the clean install were the Display driver but to my dismay there was still the dreaded BSOD. I have downloaded drivers from the Toshiba website and other sources but whatever version or source it still ends up in BSOD ............ I have tried to post the BSOD dump files with this thread and used safe mode to switch to standard vga mode so as i can use the laptop i would very much like to return to using windows normally and VERY VERY much appreciate any advice , suggestions and time taken on this problem .......... Hello Rusel and welcome.

1) Make your way to AMD Graphics Drivers & Software

2) Uninstall the one you currently have and all the extensions

3) Download Driver Sweeper

4) Get to safe mode (without network) and search for Driver Sweeper in your Start

5) Select all ATI components and analyse them

6) Clean them, head into Windows without internet and download the driver (without Catalyst).

2) What exactly am i supposed to Uninstall ? The Driver and all its extensions ? And when i follow the link what am i supposed to download exactly ? Should i uninstall the Catalyst Control Center also ?
Am sorry for being so inquisitive but i do not want to further damage the laptop

Just read it through a couple of times before doing it. You can't hurt anything, really

Sorry for not clearing things up. Let's take it slowly.

Your current ATI, your graphic driver, is probably broken and needs to be replaced. The procedure is not going to be like- uninstalling it only from the Control Panel, which is the regular place we uninstall things.
The software, Driver Sweeper will clean the leftover files, which is files being left over after the uninstall from the Control Panel. Let's visualize this in steps.

1) You will have to find your driver at this place (AMD Graphics Drivers & Software) Why that place? Because you have an ATI Graphic Card, I don't know which specific, but for the future incoming you can fill your system specs which you can see in the down-left-corner of each poster. If you wonder what system specs you have use this tool.

2) Right so now you have the driver, copy it from to your desktop so it's ready to be used when we're done with the steps, just for the helping.

3) From Phyxion.net - Driver Sweeper you can download the Driver Sweeper tool which cleans the leftover files after an uninstall of a driver.

4) Go to your Control Panel, uninstall all the extensions as Catalyst if you have that install, and all other stuff connected to the ATI driver. Atlast, uninstall the driver itself (probably called ATI Graphic Driver something).

5) It'll probably ask you to reboot your computer now, but during the reboot, go to safemode! Yes safemode! It's different to which motherboard you have which key you need to press to get into safe-mode. If you don't know how to do it, go to step 6.

6) Keep the wizard from the uninstaller in the background and press rb:, search 'msconfig', go to the 'Boot' section and select Safe-Mode and check 'Minimal'.

7) Great! Now reboot.
Your resolution is weird now isn't? All normal. Press rb:, search for 'Driver Sweeper', select all the ATI fields, click 'Analyse', and at last click 'Clean'.

8) If you followed step 6, go to rb:, search 'msconfig', deselect 'Safe-mode'. Now reboot into normal Windows 7.

9) Install the driver only itself on your desktop or where-ever you saved it from the very beginning.

I hope this cleared things up, read it through twice or more, ask questions away.

Thanks again for the ellaboration ................ I can access Safe Mode by simply pressing F8 after the Toshiba Logo ( Thats how i was able to disable the graphics card in the first place ) . I also filled my system specs as asked to make things a little clearer .Thanks for informing me about the tool .Otherwise after carefully reading through the instructions step by step to the letter, i tried ( several times ) repeating the instrustions step by step but still ended up with a BSOD immediately after the Windows logo . I think a brief description of what happened might clear things up abit :

I first completely unistalled Catalyst Control Canter & all related Ati software including Catalyst install manager. ( i was using Windows normal mode but using a standard vga display mode ).

I also downloaded the Ati driver . Apparently it is not possible to download this specific driver from the AMD website , you have to download it form the computer manufacturer website . The driver download form the Toshiba website is embedded with the catalyst software and i cannot UN check it installation or use device manager to simply look for the driver only. Luckily when i had just started using this laptop i found a folder called drivers on the C drive which had the display driver without the need to install the catalyst software. So i save a copy of this on the desktop.

I then downloaded driver sweeper and installed it.

After which i deleted the Ati radeon HD 5650 driver using device manager and checked the delete driver software box ( As the OS would just re install the same driver when looking for a display driver ).

I restart the computer but just before it boots into Windows normal mode i select F8 ( just after the Toshiba Logo ) and enter into safe mode.

Thereafter i run driver sweeper and the first option is AMD - Display which i check and select analyze.

After a minute or so of waiting ......... Driver sweeper displays a long list of files , files names and registry files all related to ati.

I select clean and after waiting for a minute or so again ........ the program asks me to reboot to which i comply.

After the computer restarts and enters windows normal mode ( it automatically installs the standard vga display adapter ) i install the driver saved on the desktop using device manager and specifying the folder on the desktop.

It installs the ATi radeon HD 5650 automatically and asks me to reboot.

I restart the computer and still end up with a BSOD.

I try and repeat the same process several times and even try uninstalling the driver embedded with the catalyst software but to no avail , i still end up with the same results.

Although i still have this problem i learnt a few things on my PC and i thank you greatly for this and the time taken to help me in this ..................

Just to speed up the process.

Follow what Frede_Gail suggests first.

Virtually all of these were BC 116.

"It's not a true crash, in the sense that the bluescreen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception".

Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OSs like XP to crash.

As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds.

If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.

If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating.

Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU.

Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference.

If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.

You might also want to consider re-installing DirectX as it appears to have b een involved with these.

Thanks again guys for the the support on this problem . After a few days of trying and retrying and trying new solutions i still ended up with a BSOD . Heres a round up of the new things i tried :
I continued playing around with different versions of the drivers and downloaded form other links although they all still ended up with BSOD.
I downloaded and installed Malware and CCleaner to check for unidentified malware or registry problems . Both programs ( fully updated )found no problems .
I tried system utilities like memcheck , chkdsk and SFC.EXE /SCANNOW to check for system problems but all seemed to find nothing .
I downloaded the CPU & GPU tools ( although i couldnt use the GPU tool as i cant start windows in normal mode with the ATi display driver enabled . I ran it anyway using Standard vga mode but it found no problems and so did the CPU test which did not find any problems.
Although these tests seemed to tell me everything else is fine i must note that whenever the computer is starting up especially after the windows logo and right before the BSOD the computer heats up exponentially . Asides from that theres not really much i have not yet tried .
O also upgraded the OS to Service Pack 1 and updated Direct X not to mention aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU.

it has been a while since my last post or any update so i think i will begin for starters i have taken the laptop back for repair but it seems the technicians themselves dont know how to go about this particular problem . After months of searching it seems my particular error is caused by a hardware malfunction , i went as far as switching hard drives with a similar laptop with all same drivers and settings and still ended up with bsod ..... Other posts on the same bsod error never seemed to have been resolved ...... Which is disturbing since most of them are on desktop graphics cards which are replacable and mine is a laptop ...... Which well is not so simple .........
