Macrium Reflect Linux Rescue CD "RTnetlink answers = file Exist"

Hi, I'm currently using Macrium Reflect Free to backup my Netbook's Drive C: which contains Windows 7.

Now I'm trying to see if my backup actually works by trying to restore it through the Linux Rescue ISO from Macrium but since this is a netbook and I don't have an external ODD, I'll make do with a USB flash drive

The USB flash Drives boots fine, I can get past the Boot Menu which contains Memtest and Linux Rescue CD(Provided by Macrium).
After selecting Linux Rescue CD, I get a black page with the message "RTnetlink answers = file Exist" error and now I'm stuck.

I've also searched this forums for any macrium + RTnetlink error but I couldn't find relevant results.

I've also searched for the error code posted above but I couldn't get any helpful information

My specs are

HP Dm1z E350 Windows 7 Home Basic OEM 32bit
Kingston 2gb DDR3 1066+HP OEM(Hyundai) 2gb DDR3 1066
Hitachi 320gb (68gb C: and 229gb D:)
Ralink 5390 Bluetooth + Wifi N
Realtek 8168 Gigabit Ethernet.

I'd be glad to post any other information required if that would help.

Hello Blu3martini and welcome to Seven Forums. Please forgive me if I've misunderstood your post. I'm not always the sharpest tool in the shed! :)

You said, "Booting the ISO goes fine until as posted in the Thread title above I get a "RTnetlink answers = file Exist" error and now I'm stuck."

Simply performing a direct copy of an ISO image file will not write the directory and file structure needed to use that file. The usual method is to burn the ISO image to CD or DVD to get an actual working file.

Burn a CD or DVD from an ISO file

Since you want to create a bootable flash drive you may want to read over this tutorial. I think (and I could be wrong) you need to save the ISO file in a convenient location (like the desktop) and then burn it to the flash drive.

I know of another free program that might work but I've never used it.

Welcome to SevenForums!

It's very smart of you to make sure the rescue disc (or USB stick) is working before you actually end up needing it. Kudos for that.

The "RTnetlink answers = file Exist" message by itself doesn't really sound like an error to me, more like an informational statement. Are you saying that the boot process get hung up at this point and nothing further happens?
Where exactly does the message appear?

I think that RTnetlink has something to do with your Realtek 8168 Ethernet controller. A possible workaround would be to disable anything LAN-related in your BIOS and try booting the USB stick again. If it starts working, at least we'll know for sure what the problem is.

Sorry if my post is a bit misleading but I already have a Bootable Flash Drive with the ISO contained in it using YUMI or Unetbootin downloaded from pendrivelinux.com

The "RTnetlink answers = file exist" appears seconds later after selecting the Linux Rescue CD option in the boot menu.

I'll try disabling the gigabit LAN in the BIOS/EFI although I don't really get why it would cause such prompt with a Linux Rescue CD that doesn't have any network options.

I've also tried to boot the same ISO in virtualBox and it works although the point is moot in restoring inside the Virtual machine.

As a last ditch effort, I'm installing XP inside virtualbox right now so I can create a BartPE rescue CD/ISO with Macrium Plugins, makes me wonder why don't they just provide the plugin files so that Vista and 7 users can also use it without having an XP at hand.

Strange message.

I recommend you make the Winpe rescue disc instead.

You just need to d/l a copy of macrium v5 ( the trial version will be fine ).

It will make a winpe disc for you.

When you created the Linux Rescue ISO did you try Compatibility Mode? You press the Advanced button then check Compatibility Mode. This sometimes sorts problems.

No not yet I'll be trying it after disabling my NIC in BIOS/EFI as suggested in the first post.

Installing Macrium in XP was a no go either it seems that the BartPE rescue CD was only for Version 4 which is now discontinued.

If my last option fails, I think I'll just try to learn how to use Clonezilla or get Drive XML instead with a UBCD4Win. I'll have to do the re-install from scratch though to make a clean Image again.

The 1.7GB download is used to make the ISO the actual ISO is much smaller about 350MB.

@Corazon

Disabling the NIC is a no, HP's EFI doesn't have much options.

@kado

I got the Macrium Plugins from a certain forum post in Macrium thanks to google, it was a year old but the link wasn't deleted so I got a BartPE ready and will reboot and test now.

I'm still trying all the remaining options and the 1.7gb download will be a last resort.

I posted a little app somewhere on this forum which will make a macrium winpe cd - without needing to download WAIK.

Can't recall where that is now.

Kado will know

I still have the files. There were 2 versions of RunMeASAdmin. If I remember correctly the first one didn't work on my HP laptop but the second did. I think these were for version 4 of Macrium though and they are x64 only.

Thanks.

Actually , you need to install macrium v5 - the trial version works fine for this.

Unzip the file you posted onto your drive.

Rt click and run as admin.

That's it.

You can reistall the free macrium v4 again afterwards if that is what you are using.

The v5 winpe cd you just made works perfectly even if you are using v4 from within windows.

Win PE

Siw2's post is the way I went with Mac 5. The Linux disk I made was a bust. Only tried it once and I went to the WinPE ver. WinPE works really great and I only made one attempt at it. I did have to dl WAIK. Macrium searches for it when creating the iso.

Actually I'm using Macrium Reflect v5 free, only reason I mentioned V4 was that it was the last version which supports making bartpeCD(which is no longer downloadble), although I got around it by finding the plugin files somewhere but now I'm stuck with BartPE requiring win2k files so scratch that and I opted for UBCD4Win instead. It couldn't detect the inf and xml file so it took some time till I found the right .inf and .xml(Macrium plugin) files in the UBCD4Win forum. I'm currently creating a UBCD4Win USB right now and I'll be trying the winpe posted above as a second choice.

Okay this is getting tiring even after spending more than a day's worth on this, I'm starting to think that BartPe or UBCD4Win can't be loaded on new systems like my HP Dm1z E350.

First issue is with the ACPI.sys, before I can enter Windows(BartPE or UBCD4Win) system will BSOD on me.

Same error as this one
Ubcd4Win Boot Issue With Dell Xps 15 Laptop - UBCD4Win Forums

I've read somewhere that I have to disable ACPI on newer systems which no longer test XP so I downloaded a .inf file to disable it in BartPE/UBCD4Win.

So now I can get to the Windows XP logo with the loading bar and now I'm faced with another BSOD.

http://i41.tinypic.com/kehnyp.jpg

I also can't use the program above as I'm running Win7 32bit.

Searched a bit more in google and now I'm stuck with an ACPI error and a Sata/AHCI driver error.

I'm getting tired over it, I think I'll just re-install Windows from the start and use clonezilla.

RE: Macrium

Okay Macrium Rescue CD sucked but so did HP on my dm1z.

I've gave up running any BartPE or UBCD4Win on my dm1z due to many issues like

Requiring ACPI.sys to be disabled or blue screen
Requiring AHCI Driver on XP Pe(Bart or UBCD) or blue screen
UBCD's driver packs didn't help containing AHCI drivers didn't work = blue screen
Lack of Options in EFI like disabling built-in LAN or reverting to IDE/Legacy.

I've tested the same tools including Macrium on my Desktops and they all work fine so I'll keep Macrium on those machines and just Clonezilla my Peculiar lappy.

I opted for clonezilla instead and it got the job done although it took 45mins total in Backing up @900MB/Min, making md5 and sha hashes, testing the image and slack time of the program. Macrium only took 5mins and backing up the same partition 10gb for clonezilla and 5gb for Macrium.

It's been a while since my last post since I've been busy at school with all the major subjects and all.

Thank you to all those who spent time to help me.

Have you tried making the WinPE disc with Macrium v5 yet? You said a couple times that you'd do this as a last resort, but it sounds to me like that would've been your best option right from the start.

Remember that BartPE is built on old Windows XP code whereas the current WinPE versions are Vista/7-based and more compatible with various hardware setups.

I already had the 100mb clonezilla in my hdd so skipped to it instead of downloading 1.7gb WAIK.

I'm going to try it next time I have lots of free time for alternative options on newer systems like my dm1z although I think I'll opt for a WinPE with GUI, maybe I can copy-paste some standalone programs like Drive XML and macrium reflect
Just finished re-installing Win7 from a clonezilla restore image and it took 15mins total.

Well yeah getting WinPE in the first place would have probably saved me the hours of headache in two days but I always want to try different options first; Maybe it's just me :)
