Imaging with free Macrium

   Information

This tutorial shows imaging with free Macrium Version 5.0. If you are still using Macrium Version 4.2, go to this Vimeo site where the tutorial of that version is stored.

The Video does not show the recovery part because I have no setup to screen capture it. But Keith (Kado) made this excellent recovery tutorial with text (but no sound) that he captured from a virtual partition.

   Warning

Note that the external disk to which you image must be formatted in NTFS. A disk that is formatted in Fat32 will accept an image, but the recovery programs cannot restore that image. You can, however, mount (open) a Fat32 image as VHD.

   Note

The production of the WinPE recovery CD (which is highly recommended) may take up to 3 hours because Macrium needs to download the 1.7GB WAIK (Windows Application Installation Kit). For your convenience I have uploaded a ready made .iso of the WinPE recovery disc. That can be downloaded in appr. 8 minutes which clearly beats the WAIK download. Once you downloaded and unzipped the folder, you can burn it directly to a CD with e.g. ImgBurn.

I draw your attention to the fact that this WinPE CD can also be used to make images. That may be convenient in case you do not want to install Macrium on your PC.

The imaging program that was used for this tutorial is free Macrium. But the basic principles are the same for other imaging programs although the user interface will be different.

This video runs for appr. 7 minutes.

Got me there mjf, you're right. Thanks for the detailed info.

I'm still pretty sure Macrium only rewrites the partition table insofar as is necessary to have the just-restored partition(s) show up correctly, but without affecting existing partitions on the disk that were not affected by the restore. So yeah, in a way we're both right - and wrong.

I am really sorry Keith. For some people the audio seems to work fine, others have the same problem as you. Try the same version on Vimeo. Maybe that works better: Macrium V5.0 on Vimeo

Thank you for the compliments. But with the accent I am always immediately being spotted as someone from someplace else. My adult kids who grew up for years in the US and in France do not have this problem. I guess when you are very young, you assume the right intonation more easily.

I lived in Germany all my life except for the 25 years I was assigned to other countries. Now I am only in the winter in Florida.

To Keith I have suggested to convert the .wmv to MP4 or AVI to see whether that helps. But then again, some other people have no problem at all (including all the systems in my house). Go figure.

I tried a straight conversion to MP4 with no improvement. It was only by extracting the sound and boosting it as described above that it became audible.

Hmm, I guess that means that I have to use another screen capture program in the future. Fortunately I have a small selection. This is really a poor performance of this $200 Microsoft Expressin Encoder 4. I will also have a look whether the sound can be boosted during the encoding phase.

I use CamStudio which produces high quality AVI but I don't know how good the sound is as I normally turn it off and use annotations instead. This is one of my videos.

No it's free CamStudio - Free Screen Recording Software,however the editing was done in Cyberlink Power Director 10 which is not.
