Hi all,

I have an ASUS N55SF and last night i decided to do a system restore from a backup i created to go back to how i bought it which was created on December 8th 2011. I set it going at 11pm last night, it is now 3:30pm the following day and still its not finished, im not sure if it has froze because the icon is still spinning and my hdd light is flashing indicating its doing something (or so i think). I created recovery discs before i created the restore point too if that helps? Im not sure what i am to do about this as i have read i could cause serious harm by turning it off.

Thankyou all in advance for your advice.

How did you create the backup? Or are you talking about "system restore points"?

Before i made it i was flagged by windows to create a back up, so i did which was saved to an external hard drive. So i opened system restore last night and saw the december 8th restore point so im assuming its a system restore point.
The restore process is just hanging at "system restore is restoring thr registry..."

You can make 2 types of backup in win7
  • System image backup: This is a backup of OS-partition. Maybe more partitions if you wish. It's needed to recover ALL data
  • windows backup: backups the files based on criteria you select.
System restore points are something totally different!!! Based on your sentence: "The restore process is just hanging at "system restore is restoring thr registry..." you are trying that

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/330-system-protection-turn-off.html

just power off your machine (what else can you do) and try again. Try a more recent "restore point" maybe that works.

Tell me results.

Please first explain why you tried system restore. Was this because your systen was very unstable for example?
I don't know why system restore lasted so long and was in some kind of loop. What I know is all systemrestore actions are done in 1 transaction. So it succeeeds or it fails. There is no thing as a half restore. But ... harddisk can errors... or system was damaged during last startup. Don't know what happened!!

Do you have a windows x64 system repair cd, or win7 x64 installation dvd?
Or just start up your pc and press F8 multiple times (1 sec in between).
perform a "system restore" from there http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/668-system-recovery-options.html

asus recovery is just sort of copy of recovery partition. I't can be used to restore to factory settings. So to go back to the state you recieved the laptop. All software and data you put on the disk is gone if you do this!!!

Don't do it yet!

The reason i wanted to restore was to wipe most of my programs and files off and thought it might have been the best option. I understand what your saying. I tried pressing f8 at startup and i just got startup repair which seemed to be looping, so i turned off and rebooted into recovery and at the minute it's on ImageX.

All is going well with the recovery as far as i can tell but the black screen would appear almost as soon as "windows is starting up". Im not too bothered about losing all my software and data aslong as i can get it back working again but thankyou for the heads up on that and thankyou for your advice on the matter.

f8 should give you advanced boot options!

What kind of recovery are you donig now? Please be more specific. The black screen issue isn't there anymore because you are recovering now. Hopefully it doesn't come back

When i pressed F8 that screen never came up, all it did was boot up and launch startup repair. Yeah i did a recovery to factory settings, well the state i bought it in. Even though i inserted my recovery disc i'm pretty sure it used the recovery partition but the first time i tried that nothing happened, the command window was blank. Well its up and running now so thankyou for helping me out Kaktussoft.
