Can anyone help please.

All my programs pinned to the start menu have disappeared and I cannot pin anything there now!

Any ideas?

TIA,
Paul.

Hi Paul,
I know I am new here but still trust me!

Anyway, to confirm there is no malware involved, please scan your comouter using malwarebytes anti-malware. Follow directions here: How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to scan and remove malware from your computer

Also run the SFC file checker 3 times and post the last log file here once you have completed it for me. Follow the directions here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

Hi,

Thanks for that, did Malwarebytes, no problems, sfc scannow found some problems, log attached.
The problem still remains though!

This may seem incredibly obvious and stupid, but have you tried rebooting your system?! I have seen people post on here and vista forums that were eventually solved by the poster rebooting the system!

Paul,

In that case, you might see if using the tutorial below to reset the Start Menu pin to area to see if you may be able to pin programs to the Start Menu again afterwards. This will clear all items pinned to the Start Menu though.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/899-start-menu-reset-pin-area.html

Unfortunately that did not work either!

Navigated to where the file should be (saw link elsewhere on the forum), and the file called 'StartMenu' is not there!

Paul,

Just to be sure, it's located in the hidden system folder below. If the "Start Menu" folder is not in the "User Pinned" folder, then the next time you pin something to the Start Menu the "Start Menu" folder is normally recreated automatically.

C:\Users\(user-name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu

I also do not see anything in your SFC log that would affect pinning to the Start Menu.

If you have a restore point available, you could do a system restore using a restore point dated before your Start Menu pinned items went awol on you to hopefully fix and restore them.

That seems to have fixed it.

I pinned something now and it is fine!!!!

I tried the .reg file. Ran sfc /scannow. I tried dropping a shortcut in the User Pinned\Startmenu folder. None of those worked. Dragging onto the Start button is ignored. (I am running Actual Multiple Monitors, which might be blocking that action.)

But, I did find a workaround for this that might help some people.

What I found I was allowed to do was drag an item from the recently-run list up into the pin list. Once up there, I could right-click and edit the properties to point it at the program I wanted. I found the easiest way to get the info in there was to create a regular shortcut to the program, open the properties to that, and then Copy&Paste from one property box to the other.

It's not ideal. I know that there's something subtly broken. But, I don't see anything important going wrong, yet. So, I'm living with it. And that makes this a workaround, not a recommended fix.

And, hopefully someone in a similar position will find this useful.

Drake Christensen
