I have an HP Pavilion g7 laptop. I charged it for 5 hours and when I turned it on today it said 2 hours 100%. The battery life is suppose to be 5 and a half hours. When I finished charging it last night the light never turned green, it stayed blue. Please tell me what's going on, and how long should I charge, and when.

The battery may be close to end of life
In the future, every now and then let the battery die and then give a full charge. It may be too late for your current battery but use that method for your new one.

I don't understand that the battery maybe close to the end of life. I just got this laptop on March 22nd. Sorry, it is my first time with a laptop what would be now and then? Every other day, once a week? What would be a full charge maybe 5 hours? When fully charged is the light suppose to be blue or green?

Not actually being there, I can only take educated guesses. All I know is that those are symptoms of a dying battery. I do know that all new batteries should be charge, without interruption for 6-10 hours before use. You may want to consult your computer manual for the proper way to maintain the battery. This may be of help, also.

You can return it to retailer normally within 30 days.

You have one year full Tech Support, replacement and parts warranty with HP. Call them to see if you are missing something or perhaps the battery needs RMA. You want to get all of these things sorted within the first year if you don't choose to take it back to retailer within their allowed time.

You should know the color of the light by now just from using it. If not, that should be clearly detailed in your manual.

Putting aside LED colors, when you had it charged, did you trying running off the battery? If so, what did Windows list for remaining time? Keep in mind that you will never see the advertised battery time.

And by the way, even though some batteries are advertised to last a certain amount of time, they often don't last nearly that long. I have an HP dv5t with a 12 cell battery that was advertised to last super-long -- and certainly longer than the comparable 6 cell battery for that model laptop. Well, the 12 cell battery doesn't last long and never has. When the battery was new, the most I could ever get was 3 to 3 1/2 hours. As it aged, it went progressively down to zero. I then replaced it with a generic (non-HP) clone and had pretty much the same results. Very frustrating!

I will let all of you know what the HP Staff says. I have charged my laptop today earlier this morning at 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. this afternoon for 6 hours, |> (I made a mistake I meant I charged my laptop for 7 hours.) and the better this evening at 7 p.m. was at 6 hours which is really good and I'm very happy about that.

I can get about six hours out of this if I switch to the Intel graphics chip.

Less if I'm working it hard, obviously, or if I run the GeForce chip.

I was both surprised and impressed.

The battery is non-replaceable(?) but is intended to be turned off when not needed.

Saves constantly punching a charge at an already-charged battery when running on mains-power.

I had my question answered by the HP Staff,
Roger the agent said that since the battery is owned by the Microsoft Company that they are just guessing about what the battery percent is at he also said that the battery is normally supposed to last for for 3 hours.

Thanks for reporting back.

Sounds like HP is referring to Win7 Power Management. Are you using that and not HP's Battery utility?

There are many useless HP utlities which have better versions built into Win7, as well as more preinstalled bloatware which can throttle Win7 if not cleaned up. Here's how: Clean Up Factory Bloatware - Windows 7 Forums

I don't know what battery I'm using Windows 7's or HP's, but thanks Greg for sharing the advice about the: Clean Up Factory Bloatware I will print it out when I get my Canon All-in-One printer set up.

Shoot. Just saw this. I did not charge my brand new laptop battery long enough, the light stays steady white so hard to tell. Did not turn on until this morning. I used it until the battery gave out this morning, so shut down completely and replugged into the wall outlet. Will let charge 7 full hours. Did I ruin the life of it being I didn't charge long enough the very first time? (yesterday?) I mean it was brand new, right out of box.

Doubtful. Contact the battery's Tech Support to ask them if you want to be sure. All hardware should have a warranty and tech support to administer it.
