A couple of chkdisk questions

Hi, I was following a tutorial regarding windows 7 chkdisk. In the tutorial they said you could do it 3 ways, just scan for errors, or by checking some options, try and repair .I followed the scan only instructions

5. To Only Scan the Drive for Errors
NOTE: This will just give you a report if there are any drive errors or not, and will not attempt to fix them.A) Leave both boxes unchecked and click on the Start button. (See screenshot below step 4)

So for each of the discs, I did the chkdisc scan, and it whipped thru all of them really fast, I'm talking about in less than a minute. On the one disk, I probably have 1 TB worth of data on of my internal drives, and a 1/2 TB worth of stuff on the c: drive All drives came back with no errors.

But this Acronis backup program support person had me run some utility of theirs to check for errors and they said based on the report I should run chkdisc on each of the discs. So that's what made me do it.

My questions are these....

1) should I trust that this superquick scan it did truly indicates that I don't have any problems on my discs?

2) Does Chkdisk have the capability of checking EXTERNAL drives?

I took a look at the link you sent me, it seems it kind of matches with the one I viewed here. But when I ran the original scan only chkdisc... I never got that window that says "Windows can't check the disc, while it's in use" It just went ahead and performed the scan. I did make sure I didn't have any programs running when I did it.

What is the reason you called Acronis support, in the first place? You never stated this. I understand the part about their utility scanner showing errors in the report. What were the specific errors which prompted them to recommend you run check disc? If you do not know, call them back and run their scanner, again. Write down what errors are in the report. We need more information to properly diagnose your issue. Otherwise, it's a guessing game. If the CHKDSK completed quickly, there is no problem detected. My CHKDSK does exactly the same as yours, finishes under 1 minute; And I have no problems with my system. If you are experiencing odd computer behavior, let us know the exact symptoms. If the Aronis software is not functioning properly, let us know what that issue is. We are here to help, that's want we do! If you and I cannot solve the issue, I will contact one of our highly skilled members or a site moderator to assist. ;)

Thank you, for choosing Windows 7 forums!

Thanks quick draw, I just posted a very long reply to your post... posted it....and now it is not showing up. I don't have time to go thru it again and I'm not my computer. When I get back, I'll post a screen grab of their error report.

This is the warning message ! The selected disc will be migrated as is (disks layout will remain MBR )
(this is not the system report utility message)

My computer has not exhibited any problems when using normally, I just wanted to confirm that my backups were going to be able to be recovered properly. Acronis has 2 ways you can recover backups - You can choose partition mode or disc mode... the warning message above in bold is what comes up when choosing the disc mode option

As far as I know, a thorough Checkdisk scan takes more than seconds. More like an hour for each 300 GB drive space--something like that.

The command is chkdsk /r

The results can be seen in Event Viewer.

I wouldn't assume my drive is healthy just because it passes Checkdisk. Checkdisk is about looking for file system errors and bad sectors, but your drive could drop dead at any time for no apparent reason.

Hello, Ignatzatsonic!

CHKDSK /R (R for repair). Not sure if OP checked the box to run CHKDSK repair. I did provide links for CHKDSK tutorials. If I understand this correctly, the OP is receiving a warning message after install of ARONIS. He called, Aronis support after getting the warning message to find out what was wrong. The tech ran a scanner which indicated a possible problem with the HDD. This is where we are at this point. Thanks, for the assist.

justan update

Hey, I did do another chk disk scan of my c: drive and it took almost 3 hours, after doing that I reran the Acronis system report.

Just to clarify something ... the acronis error or warning did not occur after instal... the program installed ok... I'm getting the warning when selecting the backup file and trying to open it in what they call "disc" mode. From my understanding that takes and recovers the entire disk. If you set it to "partition mode" than it will recover those partitions that are selected.

The first screen grab shows the warning message I am getting in the acronis backup program when trying to recover via " disc mode"

The second attachment is a screen grab of the windows event on the chkdisk scan and fix ... it is showing there were no errors.

The third is a screen grab of a PORTION of the Acronis system report... this was after doing the chk dsk. What I was told by the tech at acronis is where you see the E's within the very first 10 lines or so of the report, indicate errors to them. I have sent the report in to their forum, but don't have much hope based on past experience for any real good answers. So thats where I am at now....still stumped, and without any confidence that I could actually recover a backup.

It appears Acronis forum has replied. Here's their comments.

Hi harleynut97,
You needn't worry about this message. It simply states that your disk partition style will remain MBR. Such messages appear in ATIH 2012 in the disk recovery mode because ATIH 2012 supports UEFI and GPT partition style. When a PC uses BIOS, the partition style remains MBR. If you've tried to restore this backup to a UEFI-booted PC using Universal Restore, the disk partition style would be converted (migrated) from MBR to GPT.
Vlad

So, in this case, just shot the messager.

Hopefully that is true, but I am waiting to hear back from the acronis moderator regarding the system report I posted which he requested. It concerns me their reports show my drives have some kind of error, but chkdisk comes thru without errors. So will have to see I guess. Thanks for the update - Carl

If you'd like I can request a higher skilled member or moderator to assist with your issue.

But, probably should wait to see what this Aronis Mod has to say.

Yes, I agree, I'll wait to see if I get anything back from them. I don't want to make this thread stray too far from why it was originally posted. It was pretty much to answer questions I had regarding using chkdisk in win 7 and I have definitely had those questions answered thanks to you and others.

If I do get a response back from them, I'll be sure to post the reply. Thanks again - Carl

Well... kind of an update. The errors that seem to be showing on my drives, are not really errors. They have something majorly wrong with their system report in 2012. After hours of tech support discussions, one of the people decided to try and run the report on THEIR system... they ended up with the same errors showing up on their computer at Acronis.

All of the chkdisc scans on my drives showed no errors, but their system report showed otherwise. I am having a continuing problem with everytime I run a system report... it crashes their program. They had me upload a bunch of reports from my system to try and figure out why it is crashing everytime.

As a side note, the only way I was able to gain an acronis system report was them emailing me a file, and running that outside of the acronis interface. But if I try to run the system report via their program....instant crash

They have asked me to wait until they have a new update which comes out in about a week or so... to see if that fixes the crash problem ... if it does not than they said they are going to escalate it (which I thought had already been done).

So the bottom line is , I don't think anything is wrong with my discs, I have tried, and have been able to, recover some files successfully from a backup I have done. But I have not tried to recover windows or system files... just data.

So we will have to see what happens after the update in a week or so.
