Title says it all really, Windows 7 won't shut down when doing it your average joe way of start> shut down.

I'm on build 7000.

P.S i did mention this in another thread, but to upgrade to a newer build i take it i need to download them and install them, not just do it through windows update? And also, if i install them can i do an upgrade so i don't lose all my stuff.

What happends when you use the power button, does it start a shutdown?

with RC's and betas, a fresh install is ALWAYS recommended...

Hi xrey, welcome to the forums.

Firstly (and only really ;)) you need to upgrade to a new build of Windows 7. You can find some info on the latest build here...

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-...-16385-final-rtm-after-being-passed-vote.html
   Note
We cannot give links as this is (or looks to be) the final build so would be classed as piracy

When you say 'stuff' do you just mean documents/music/picture/videos etc? I ask this because you can use http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/11470-windows-easy-transfer-transfer-computers.html to save ALL your files & settings to a folder (preferably) on an external source. Then 'clean' install the new OS.
   Note
Any software will need to re-installed

As far as upgrading goes, you should have no issue upgrading 7000 to any other build as it's lower than the minimum client for upgrading. If you want the 'official' public release then you can get it directly from microsoft untill August 12th (or there abouts).

Hope this helps :)

Jeff

Thanks for that jeff, i'll take a look at those. So i can save all my files, game saves, documents etc, i just need to re-install any programs that i'm going to want?

Also, when i re-install windows 7, all my programs are installed to my F: drive, i take it i should just delete those files when i've re-installed, or will they delete automatically?

Finally, this easy transfer you were talking about, can this be done in safe mode, as my windows 7 is now refusing to boot :)

You definitely need to upgrade builds. Grab the RC (available until August 16th I believe), or wait for GA if you can.

An alternate method to what Jeff (Orbital Shark) recommends would be leaving all your programs and settings, and just clean installing over them.
This will 'wipe' your HDD. HOWEVER, it leaves the lovely Windows.old folder, which you can then restore from in a seemingly complicated procedure (it is actually really easy, I did it).
