Solved Periodic "Windows 7 Build 7601 This version of windows is not genuine"

Noel:
I was already offered MSE and IE9 before this problem occured, and I turned them down already. Don't like either of them. Thanks for the help! Restarted, and the "not genuine" message is gone.

just because they're offered, doesn't mean you have to take them :)

System Restore is not a backup or imaging tool - there are dozens of good such tools around.

This is a different error to the original one, but still iin the Licensing Store.
It sounds as if something is repeatdly corrupting the Store, which may be an indicator of either malware, or a hardware problem.
Since you say that you've just changed the RAM, that's an obvious starting-point. DOwnload MemTest86+ from www.memtest.org and create the boot CD, then boot from it, and run the test for at least a couple of hours and see if it shows any problems.

Seems like a good idea to check.

Also, I recently got an error message saying "An unauthorized change has been made to windows. Please reinstall windows and reactivate, or use system restore to undo these changes."

I haven't done anything, and there has been no malicious software on my computer.

Also, I have heard a rumor (actually, I read it) that windows cannot accept two hardware changes at once. Since I removed and replaced both of my ram cards while I was upgrading one of them, could this have caused it? Is this a actual problem, or is it just a rumor?

I know that I inserted both ram cards correctly too, and I properly shut down my computer prior to changing them.

I'll run Memtest overnight, as I need to use my laptop during my waking hours.

It's an urban myth - WIndows 7 will allow you to change pretty much everything except the motherboard without a murmur (but it may demand drivers)
Good luck with the MemTest - an overnight run should bring out any problems that do exist.

I restarted the laptop, and the not-genuine message is gone.
However, I refuse to believe that it's really been resolved...

I'm still going to run Memtest overnight, and post the results.

As I expected, it's back.
Also, I let memtest run overnight, but it wasn't as I hoped.
It only just made two passes (the AMD C-50 processor only has 1ghz pf processing power, I'm not too surprised, but I expected at least a little more)
Eventually I needed the laptop, so I canceled the scan. It found no errors, though I can't say how accurate that is with only two passes.

And Windows is still not "genuine".

The amount of time and energy that the OP has spent trying to resolve the issue has established that at least the Product Key used in his floor-model purchase is genuine. The other thing though not 100% established but almost so is that the problem is with software.

If the above two statements are reasonably correct then in my opinion the best thing to do would be to do a clean install of his version of Windows 7 and use the existing Product Key. It shall save the OP hours of effort and heartache.

Yes, I am absolutely certain the key is genuine-- this isn't the first floor-model I've bought from Office Depot. Though I do suppose I made a hasty choice, and picked one with terrible specs...

A floor model does not come with any discs, as far as I know, there is no way for me to clean install windows again.
Besides, I hate circumventing problems. When something goes wrong, I like to find a solution for it, because that way I learn something from it, as opposed to just giving up and taking the easy (?) way out.

You're right though, it wouldn't be much trouble to clean install, if I had to. I've only had the laptop for a few weeks, backing up everything should only take an hour at most. But again, the stuff I said above.

You can easily download an ISO image of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (I presume your version as per your specs) from Official Windows 7 SP1 ISO from Digital River « My Digital Life and burn it on a DVD to have your own Windows 7 Installer DVD. Then you may install it and use your genuine key to activate. This is a legit, Microsoft supported download site for Windows 7.

It is my personal opinion not supported by many that every time you try and correct problems it leaves your PC a little bit downgraded. That is why we have imaging software and Microsoft has made it easy to get bloatwareless OS for installation with the advent of Windows 7.

Your troubles shall then be over once and for all. It is now all up to you.

Nah - the real reason is that once they started offering downloads from teh MS Store there was no way they could stop them leaking - and it was cheaper (and better PR) to allow it than to charge for disks :)

And I noticed you got another yellow rectangle thing, congratulations Noel

The error you're showing - '0xC004F012' - is a fairly generic 'I don't have a clue' one.
Let's start with the easy fix - (it may not 'fix' anything - but it will eliminate a few possibilities along the way)
Note that in line 6 you may have to use a different name for the target - perhaps 'tokens.bar3' or '....bar4' to avoid attempting to over-write previous attempts.

Please first try recreating the Licensing Store.
Recreate the Licensing Store
1) Click Start button.
2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
4) Type: net stop sppsvc (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.
5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
7) Type: cd %windir%\system32
8) Type: net start sppsvc
9) Type: slui.exe
10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report

If you get any error messages along the way- what EXACTLY are they?

-Headdesk-
I can't believe I missed the line that said "Error: . . ."

I'd already figured out that I needed to change the name-- I feel a little proud of that :)

This time, SLUI opened up, and it said "Activation was Successful"
Though I I'm still not very convinced.

For now though, it's fixed! Again!
Thanks for the help again Noel!

For now, I'll mark this as solved again, but if it happens again, I'll open it back up.

Why is there still problem if there's no error?
And what does it mean by "License Status: Initial grace period

Should I do the phone activation?
And what do I need to gather together before doing the phone activation, if I should?
