Occasionally get a "Windows is not geniune" message upon boot

Starting a few months ago, I once in a while see a "Windows is not geniune" message as Windows starts to boot. Running W7 Ult 64-bit, I have not yet updated to SP1. I click "ask me later", get another screen that I click out of, and then Windows boots. I go to Control Panel\System and Security\System and right there at the bottom, it says:

Windows Activation--------------

Windows is activated
Product ID: xyz

This is a retail OEM version.

Any idea what is going on here?

Thanks!

Hi,

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool:

1. Download and Save to desktop from this link:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

2. Once saved, run the tool. Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.

3. Click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages), and then paste into your next reply.

Regards,
Golden

Please post the unedited MGADIAG report - nothing can be "stolen" from the edited items, its quite safe to post that information.

Tampered Service: sppuinotify
The above tampered service is probably the root cause of the non-genuine notification. It was either modified, tampered with or possibly corrupted due to malware. Lets assume its the latter. You need to do the following:

1. Click Start Orb, and in the search box type cmd
2. Right-click on cmd.exe when it shows, and then select 'Run as administrator'
3. In the cmd window, type sfc /scannow and hit enter

Post the results of this window, and then run a new MGADIAG report, and post the un-edited contents here.

Regards,
Golden

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

( promised Golden I wouldn't interfere, but....)

Getting the unedited data is important, because it allows us to cross-check certain aspects - it's sometimes possible to tell then whether the installation has been sverely corrupted, or sompliy has a wrong setting somewgere.

Also (if you're clever than me) it can be fed into a parser which automates the reading and diagnosis (project for next year anyone?)

In your case the probable cause of your problems is a mis-set SPPUINOTIFY service.

please run the following commands from an Elevated Command Prompt window

NET START SPPUINOTIFY
SC QC SPPUINOTIFY
SC QUERYEX SPPUINOTIFY

copy and paste the results in your response

Hmmm - that looks normal.
The simplest solution would probably be to install SP1 - is there any reason that you haven't already done so?

Yeah - I have the if it an't broke don't fix it mentality. Of course, you will say, "don't worry, it's safe to upgrade", and you are probably right, but....

Thank you for your time.
