Did you by chance either install win 7 as an upgrade, or move the files from one hd to another?

Clean install.

they are shared over the network, my xbox and my other PC can access them.

Also i do use libraries but only have the default folder in them, which i re located through the properties to my other partition.

Thing is, its not every folder, its just some, like 20 folders in video folder, contating a video, some of the 20 folders have a lock.

Why is this?

*Solved

Set sharing to Everyone. This is very stupid, Videos Folder was moved, some videos end up with lock, some dont. It also said some are in use, i disconnected my ethernet cable. Still in use. WMP was closed, nothing at all could of been accessing the files. very weird. didnt have any problem in vista.

I've noticed the lock gets put on them when you create a read only share.

I'm getting locks on all the folders in a partition I have, it just started today. My permissions had disappeared in that drive earlier today, I had to re-set myself as owner and now everything is locked, even if I create new folders or move other folders into that drive! Sharing is set as follows:

Suggestions are most welcome... thanks!

yes, I added "Everyone" to sharing, then removed "Everyone", back to default, now has a lock. Only way to get rid of the lock is to share with "Everyone", but i don't want to!

Ugh, they should get rid of the Lock thing, and end it.

Im not sure its a problem (for me at least) other than looking different. If i dont want it shared i can see why it would have a lock on it but i haven't found any downsides to this. I still have full access on the PC

Just worked out how to get rid of the lock.
Right click the folder, go to Properties/sharing and then advanced sharing and un tick share this folder. This seems to take sharing off without putting the lock icon on it.
I guess the lock icon is to do to with setting the folder to share with no one rather than not shared.

Hope this helps.

i required one extra step, add "Everyone" to sharing list, then disabled sharing the way you describe and its gone.

I think the lock means, the folder is shared, but only you have access to it.

Are these folders that you haven't shared already then?
I have had a few that have appeared over time with the lock on them and aren't shared folders. I just take ownership of them and the lock goes away.

you can also get rid of the lock by adding Authenticated Users to the security permissions. I don't know wtf is happening here though, its damn annoying. At the moment everytime i try to unshare a folder is says 1 file is being used by 1 user do i want to continue. but in computer management / shares / sessions that user is me.

I suspect this may have something to do with folders or a drive that was owned by a previous perhaps vista user which has the same name as the the current win 7 user. I'm going to try a format and reinstall....

I also get the folder being used by 1 user message but just ignore it. And this is on a clean install this morning when i was trying to get rid of the lock icon.

I think I worked it out

Firstly, if a folder doesnt have "Everybody" or "Authenticated Users" in the security tab with read permissions then a lock icon will appear.

Say I want to share a folder, which has the following security permissions:

Authenticated Users - Modify
SYSTEM - Full Control
Administrators - Full Control
Users - Read and Execute

I right click and select Sharing and it comes up with:

Administrators - Owner
my_user_name - Read / Write

I click Share and the folder is shared.

BUT I think to Share the folder with the settings above - Administrators and my_user_name - windows automatically removes "Authenticated Users" and "Users" from the security permissions and adds "my_user_name".

So now the permissions after sharing are now:

SYSTEM
Administrators
my_user_name

Turning off sharing doesn't restore the old security permissions. So after turning it off we are left with no "Authenticated Users" and therefore a lock icon.

Same thing happens when sharing with HomeGroup and then unsharing - "Authenticated Users" is removed and the lock icon appears.

I think this is a bit of a bug personally. Everyone is going to end up with lock icons everywhere and the forums will be full with similar questions.

MY OTHER BUG

If I start a homegroup and share everything using the homegroup setting dialog it all shares on the network, even to other computers. If I then turn off sharing using the homegroup settings, those folders remain shared!

ANOTHER BUG

If I remove a folder from a shared library it remains shared!

I don't have any solution for these problems. To me they seem like bugs. One thing that helps normal sharing is to add "Everyone" in the security permissions, and then when sharing "Everyone" will be in the default list (for read only). Turning off sharing doesn't have the lock as "Everyone" was still in the security permissions. This doesn't work with HomeGroup sharing however, as "Everyone" is removed when sharing is applied.

I can't remember how the permissions changed when sharing in Vista?

Any one got any other ideas?
