Hello everyone, this is my very first post, i had been on this forums a lot reading some really interesting information and helpful things, the community here seems to be one of the most friendliest i have met so anyway let me get to the point. Today during my regular cleaning routine that i usually do that includes running antivirus, disk cleanup, and defragmenting i went ahead and ran ccleaner which deleted alot of crap for me over 1gb, then i went ahead and ran the registry part of it and it had detected more than 188 issues on it which seems like a lot to me. I did my fair share of research and found a lot of mixed opinions but i would like to hear from you guys, so in conclusion is a registry cleaning worth it for a PC to be as fast and stable as it could be?

First off, welcome to the forums! Second, registry cleaning creates more problems than it solves. I don't even recommend using third party ccleaners and whatevers, but other people on this forum like ccleaner. I have had great performance just by running disk cleanup and disk defragmenter along with a virus scan from Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials.

In my experience, Registry Cleaning consistently only did one of these:
  1. Break Stuff
  2. Nothing
I ran registry cleaner software on a fairly old W7 (running since RTM without reinstall) system, and it found over 1000 "issues". That saved me about 1% of registry file size, and forced me to reinstall a while later because even with the restore function provided by the cleaner I was unable to repair the "fixes".

I would recommend CCleaner, Disk Cleanup, Uninstalling useless programs, and Disk Defragmenter. Mainly because those have helped my PC a lot in the performance section.

Here is the simple of it. If you don't know what you are doing with the registry don't mess with it. If I was going to use a Registry Cleaner my choice would be Ccleaner. Just checking scan and then fix issues can get you in trouble with any product because nobody knows what was done. Once the scan is done and posted you have to know what all those things are and whether they are good or bad. Most people don't know, including me. If you do decide to take the plunge. Make a new restore point. When Ccleaner ask if you want to save select YES.

I use the CCleaner occasionally -- never have any problems. But beforehand, I create a System Restore point and do an ERUNT backup.

Ok so registry cleaning would not seem to be worth it what about revo uninstaller since that also deletes registry keys wouldn that be dangerous too? Since i use that as my primary uninstaller

Why use that for a program uninstaller? Aren't you uninstall your programs through the control panel?

I have used Revo for years and it has never failed. Remember you get to pick and choose by ticking in Revo. Be careful, if you tick the wrong thing you might end up with a door stop. Also when using Revo you are only working with one program you are removing not the entire Windows registry.

IMHO registry are not needed but are used because people want to.
Most of the people that use them believe that they will improve the computer's speed. They believed what the makers of the registry cleaners said which are all lies.

You should be aware that some of the registry cleaner/optimizer apps that you see advertized out there on the 'net may actually be malware delivery mechanisms.

I don't think registry cleaners have provided any significant performance improvements since the Windows 95/98/Me days, where the registry was handled and structured differently, and I don't think it used indexing. With XP and later you've also got much better memory management. Even the pre-XP original NT line handled the registry better than 95/98/Me versions.

But I'm not sure if 95/98/Me even needed a registry cleaner if the machine didn't see a slew of app installs/uninstalls. I had one 95 machine that had quite a few apps on it that ran a full 10 years without a cleaning or OS reinstall, but it didn't see very many app uninstalls. And it always seemed to boot and run about as well as any other with similar hardware. I guess another thing that helped is the fact that it never got hit with any malware.

Although I'll use CCleaner on w7 systems you've got to wonder if deleting a few hundred or even a thousand dead/bad keys (which are either not used or ignored anyway) out of a million would allow you to measure much of a benefit. I think you would get a greater benefit just by consolidating the registry files themselves by performing a defrag.
