Solved WIN7 7601 error on GENUINE WIN7

Hi Noel, thank you for getting back to me, I hope your head is not too sore from your drinks down the pub.

I have just reset my password etc for the forum so will now be able to link up on my laptop.

I have written in red, in answer and also to clarify on certain instructions. :)

OK - to the boot options problem.

Please tell us exactly what the screen looks like currently (has a third option crept in?) I am assuming you mean the screen when i immediately switch on the laptop. I have a black screen that highlights on of three (with 20 seconds countdown) the highlighted one is selected. The Black Screen reads:

Windows 7 (this is the one highlighted and opperating with correct install)

Please also run the following commands in an elevated command prompt, and copy/paste the results to your reply Sorry, I am a bit thick when it comes to computer tech, what screen do I type the below in, and if this is in the black boot screen what do I need to select to get into the correct screen to type this? That last entry is worrying! - although as it almost certainly refers to the original counterfeit install, it's not too surprising.

You can only issue commands once Windows has booted :)
Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the CP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Windows, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Wipe the HD with Diskpart Clean Command before trying install again.

Follow these same steps to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Hopefully you made the Vista Recovery disks so you have a path back if you ever want to sell the machine but keep your genuiine Win7 copy. If not you can first try running Vista recovery, make the Disks in Vista, then wipe the HD to continue.

As already pointed out you can always Clean Reinstall Vista with the Product Key on COA sticker, so back that up now. MS makes the OEM put the COA sticker on all windows preinstallations so you can use it's key to bail out the copy you own from exactly this type of incompetent tech support situation, and into the protection of MS Activation servers.

Hi gregrocker, thanks for replying, I appreciate this. I am not a computer techy at all, more like a damsel in distress. I really thought I was getting somewhere.... :cry:

I will look at the links below. But, if all goes wrong, I CANNOT revert back to Vista, my Vista boot discs (that I burnt when laptop was first purchased) they no longer read because of installing Acer's Win 7 upgrade disc, that corrupted factory set partition also. This was a big Acer screw-up, my model laptop not compatible with Win7 so I have lost many functions, drivers, programs, webcam etc.

Will my new Win7 complimentary Win7 Disc work as a Boot disc? I will now read the instructions on those links to see how to get my head around all this.

Of course the WIn7 DVD will boot to install. This is the correct way to install an OS. Follow the best practices given in these same steps for Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

It doesn't matter what Vista disks you have and whether they work. If you have a readable Product Key for Vista on the COA sticker then you can reinstall that licensed version using its retail installer at any time in the future no matter what your OEM says.

This is one reason why the COA sticker is put there, so that consumers have a way to retrieve their OS via a Clean Reinstall when OEM's try to mess with you about how you can and can't reinstall your own OS property.

Of course MS did you one better by providing you a free Win7 copy to replace the bad one you bought. So my comments are more to put the facts on the record for others who are bullied by their OEM.

Do I follow then the instructions that gregrocker suggested? Is there any other threads on here that will give me simply explained steps I need to take. I am starting to get seriously agitated.

Do I make sure the CD tray is out when disc cleaning 'C' (eradicating the operating system) and I do then turn the laptop off and start it with the disc inside? The instruction pamphlet from MS only talks about installing from desktop, which I won't have if there is no OS on the laptop.

I have hopefully attached now the other reading your requested yesterday, not that it seems important now.

Ps, do I wipe out the factory boot partition also - it is unuseable vista won't work.

Exactly what does it say on your new DVD? Any Win7 installation DVD is bootable to get the best install.

In your case we are only adding the preliminary step of wiping the HD of possible bad code in the boot sector so that it cannot interfere. We solve problems here every day using that procedure.

To run the Diskpart Clean Command back up your files, boot the Win7 DVD, press Shift + F10 at first screen to open the command box and type in the commands given.

Then close the Command Box and click Install Now, follow these illustrated steps to Clean Install Windows 7

I would not be worried but looking forward to having the best possible install with a new lifelong Win7 license courtesy of MS. We are here to help you every step of the way.

Do I need to clean the hidden corrupted factory boot partition too?

Ps. Just for the record, it was in Microsoft's pamphlet that came with the disc that told me to install via desktop.

In order to Clean the crucial boot sector where corrupt code may reside, you must clean the entire HD. So the Clean command will wipe out everything. Make sure to back up your files and otherwise prepare according to the Best Practices outlined in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which also explains how drivers are best handled in Win7.

Hi Noel, thank you for this, I was just dotting every 'T' and 'i' on the link instructions on how to clean reinstall a factory OEM.

I have been updating win7 updates all day... it has been a long day....

My Disc sleeves says it includes Service Pack 1.

Is this what I am downloading now? I am so sorry, I know I am probably asking really silly questions, but you won't believe how hard I am trying this end to understand the lingo that is completely 'double dutch' to me. You guys have been great since the time I purchased this darn laptop, and have lead me through areas inside this computer system that I would never have normally ever ventured into.

Thanks again - and I do hope others that may find themselves in this particular pickle, gain wisdom from reading this thread. I will never be buying an Acer again, that is for sure. I just so look forward to having this 2 year problem fixed, so I can at last use the laptop and ditch my old 2003 Toshiba, that still works well, just rather tired longing for retirement. :)
