A lot of random files on my C drive.

Hi,

I recently noticed a whole bunch of random files on my C drive. They are a lot of "Eula" files, globdata, installres.dll files, and a "VC_RED" installer and rar file. When I bring my cursor over the installer it says something about C++ 2008 or something.

These were not here before, but recently I had been installing some programs but I don know where this came from. Does anyone know what they are?

The installres.dll file belongs to VCRedist from VC++ 2008 installs temporary files in root directory being one of the MS components the new programs require to be present and why you are seeing temporary installation folders most of which are no longer needed.

The C++ 2008 reference is for the Visual C++ 2008 redistributable package the programs's installers will automatically download if not already on or simply required to be installed and simply reinstalled again by each program. The program disk will often include a copy of the Visual C++ 2008 as well.

Random files can sometimes be created by Malware, so doing a scan with updated definitions would be a good idea. Although the names of the files sound harmless, it can''t hurt to run a scan anyway.

It never hurts to run a security sweep at any time while too often temp install folders never get cleaned up after something new is installed. If you browse through the Windows and other folders deep enough you will likely find a mountain of empty temp folders that can be dumped.

One program that if often recommended for cleaning all those up to recovery drive space as well would be the CCleaner program. Just be sure to uncheck the delete IE history items before running it however if you use IE for the main browser.

My way of thinking is a temp file meaning temporary file is exactly that temporary and can be removed safely. If Windows 7 need a temp file for what ever reason it will just make another one. I clean my temp files several times a day.
