No sound coming from speakers, headphones OK

Since yesterday sound has stopped coming from my laptop speakers, when i plug my earphones in sound comes from through the earphones.

Additionally when i click the volume control for the earphones sound will come through the speakers for a just few seconds before going silent again.

Having done nothing consciously to fix the problem it has suddenly started to work again.

All I have done is had a video chat with someone via QQ and internet browse

*edit* video chat was a one way thing as I had no earphones in. Me talk, other person type.

Did you restart the computer at any point?
You'd be surprised how many random glitches that solves...

no i didnt restart the computer.

The sound has gone again, then when I was on a QQ video call it came back and when the QQ video call ended i lost sound again.

Any idea?

Ive recorded the problem and up;loaded it to youtube, demonstrated the problem using skype rather than qq, hope someone can help
