To make sure I get the best audio quality possible, I want to burn my audio CDs in iTunes at the lowest possible speed to minimize writing errors. However, when I set the speed to 1X in iTunes, it burns a 54min CD in about three minutes, which seems the same as max speed. At least when I tried 8X once, it took the same amount of time as 1X.

Does anyone know why this is happening and what I can do to fix it?

1x Speed will not necessarily give the best results even if your writer is capable of such a low speed. Try 12x and see what the quality is like. I'm willing to bet you wont hear the difference between 4x and 12x but what do I know about music, I'm over 70:D

Most newer (last 10 years or so) CD burners don't support speeds lower than 8X. The best you can do is go with the lowest supported speed.

That must be it then! Thanks for clearing that up.

My Audio CD burn speed "standard" is 8X. I have a recording studio and also do some small batch Audio CD duplicating with a bank of 5 USB connected PATA burner drives. We did some extensive testing and found that 8X is compatible with almost all audio CD players (older devices are the main problem). CD's burned at higher speeds will either skip or not play at all on older CD players. Older car in-dash CD players are a prime speed sensitive problem.

I had checked many SATA CD/DVD burners and never found any that would burn at less that 16X until I ran across one model LG burner, that will burn at 8X. The model number is GH24LS70.

I ony use Taiyo Yuden ink jet printable CD-R blanks (and NO paper labels).
