hi again guys, just been through a lenghty prosess on here trying to sort out a bsod. in the end i had to get hold of gigabyte for a unreleased alpha version of the bios. @bios FDa

my specs
-windows 7 home premium 64bit sp1
-GA-78LMT-S2P rev 4.0 FDa
-ATI 6570 1gb graphics card catalist 12.8
-AMD FX-4170 quad core 4.2ghz

now the problem is, after i installed the new bios, my cpu is now showing 2.82ghz instead of the 4.2ghz and i dont know how to fix it.

before bios update
cpuz is also saying it is now a AMD fx-4170 quadcore processor black edition 4.2ghz
AMD vison engine controll centre 4.2gzh
windows is showing it as a 2.82ghz

after bios update
cpuz is also saying it is now a AMD fx-4170 quadcore processor (wheres the black edition gone?) and showing 2.8ghz
AMD vison engine controll centre dosnt even show my cpu anymore.
and windows is showing it as a 2.82ghz

Your MB is not designed for a 125W processor. Gigabyte played the same game with rev 3.1 by issuing a BIOS update to allow use of some Bulldozer processors.
My theory is that your MB is under clocking your processor because of its inherent 95W limit.
If it were me, I would send the board back and get a board that was designed, from the get-go, for the Bulldozer processor.

The obvious would be to go back to the old BIOS. What was the purpose of updating the BIOS in the first place? If there was no immediate problem that would require a BIOS update to fix a specific issue, why do it?

The BSOD, are you sure the BIOS was the cause of that. Most of the time its a faulty driver, out dated driver or bad memory. Did you post your BSOD in the BSOD forum...them guys and gals over there really know their stuff.

I was having bsod whilst trying to play a new game, it was a secondary clock timing out message, I posyed to amd tech help, and to gigabyte tech help, I posted on here and other sites, o went throuhj all the standard things, driver updates, chip updates, bios settings, stress testing, unclockimg gfc card etc. In the everybody said update the bios, well it was one of the very first things everbody sugested, but I only did it after extinguishing all other routes first. I know a bios update is not to be taken lightly, even im my other post on here when I said I fixed the bsod issue I said dont flash bios untill u tried everything else,

Not being moody or having a go just explaining myself as to why.

Also went back into msconfig and 4 cores are showing up again, still at the 2.82mhz though.. Also the game has stopped working again. Im doing a fresh onstall of windows to see if that helps. Sod the poxy game, I just want my pc back.

Also got hold of the business that made it for me, after I yold them that thr cpu not compatable with mobo etc they said they would pick it up and replace parts (only got it 3 weeks ago)

So either I fix it before monday or they do.

Sorry for spelling etc im typing on a tiny phone lol

That would be a bad move do the above advise get ahold of Gigabyte tell them to RMA your Board get a new one only update the bios if it is really needed

At this point if you do RMA don't do any Bios upgrade just leave it

The simple answer is "YOU" can't fix it without replacing hardware. Its a 125 watt processor in a Motherboard that is only rated for 95 watts. You're more than likely going to damage something, if you haven't already.

Just got hold of the company I purchased it off, he said my cpu underclock could be due to ram errors and asked me to take a ram stick out and test it, then do the same again with the other one using mem test. Could a error with a ramstick actully cause cpu underclocking??

Also when I told him the ga-78mlt-s2p rev 4.0 does not support the amd fx-4170 quad core cpu acording to the gigabyte cpu compatability tab on there website, he just said "it is supported but the website is not updated compatabilitu. Tab yet" had a ticket open with higabyte for 3 days now... They not responding, can u guys help clarify any of this please

The CPU compatibility list I looked at did not list any processors higher than 95 Watts. If that board supported a 125 processor I would expect at least one to show up on the list somewhere. A BIOS update cannot make a motherboard support a higher wattage processor than it was originally designed for. It can add support for processors released after the board was released but those processors still have to be compatible with your motherboard. The motherboard has a maximum clock frequency, thermal limit, etc. A BIOS update will not change that. There are AMD FX processors supported by your motherboard, but the one you have in it is not. Gigabyte can confirm this if they ever get back to you. The company that built your system should know this also. The BIOS update is simply adding code that lets you BIOS identify the currently installed processor and set the correct timings automatically. If it doesn't have the code to properly ID the processor it may default to basic timings or use incorrect timings. Usually you get a BIOS error message saying "Processor not supported" or something similar.

OK, good observation there stormy. I went by the "GA-78LMT-S2P rev 4.0 FDa" the OP posted in the first post. I Googled it and one of the links took me to Gigabyte. The CPU list I got there only listed 95 watt CPU's. We'll have to wait for the OP to confirm what exact version they have. Hopefully they didn't flash with the wrong BIOS?

Na its the right bios update, fda os an update for steam games acordimg to gigabyte who replied to me today, somthing todo witj compatability issues,

They also confirmed what yoi guys said about beong. 95w only,,

The company I purchased it from lied saying ot is compatable and that I would habe to pay repair fees!

Well umtill now I hope, as ive told them that gigabyte told me it isnt, also sent them a copy og what gihanyte daid, aaand puy in they sold me a deffective product. And some false afvertising with somr misleading info and thay I wany mobo replaced or o I will contact ebay and push it through that way,

I am being fair reguarding the company right? I mean there business is making pcs so they should know.
