Hello!
I've been experiencing a particular crash for about 3 months now and can't seem to figure it out.
-No slowdown or errors prior to crash
-display fills compleyely with vertical lines of varying colors in most cases
-occacionally, the screen will start to gradually fade to white around the edges instead
-the PC becomes completly unresponsive, no BSOD, hard reboot required each time.
-most instances of this crash seem completely random, not linked to a particualar activity, it even happened once when I was trying to type out the former version of this post.
-I say most instances because the one activity which will almost definitly provoke this crash is steaming videos on youtube
-Other video streaming sites don't particulatly seem to provoke this, just youtube. I don't know if there's something different about youtube, but this may provide a clue.
-This will occur randomly when browsing the internet, nothing to graphical/memory intensive
-It will also occur when no web browser is open, happened a couple times while running CCleaner.
-Also, youtube is not the most graphic/memory intensive activity I perform on this PC. I do play Final Fantasy XIV online regulary and for up to around 5 hours at a time, generally without a crash to speak of. I believe that game is known to be a little on the heavy side as well. If something like streaming videos crashes, I don't see why that wouldn't.

I have also done some testing in safe mode, even with a workaround used to achieve sound in safe mode. Youtube videos DO NOT crash in safe mode, HD, fullscreen, sound, everything fine albeit a little laggy. Infact I have never expericenced this crash while operating in safe mode which leads me to believe this isn't hardware related.

At this point I feel like I have tried everything. I started out on Vista Home x64, ran many virus scans, malware, adware, ect scans, the results were inconclusive. I uninistalled the drivers for my display adapter and reinstalled them plus the whole catalyst control deal multiple times over. I've performed a complete system restore, and still experienced the crash. Since then I have upgraded to windows 7 Ultimate x64 and while is appears to be a fair bit more stable and quicker, I'm still plagued by this crash.

Other things I've done were run a hard disk check at bootup which found nothing, plus a windows memory checker which also found nothing.

I'm kind of at a loss here which is why I now turn to the wonderful folks here for help. Any thoughts?

I have also provided the .zip file yealded from the crash thread instructions page.

-Thank you!

Thanks Anthony.
I have updated my graphics drivers, uninstalled them, reinstalled them, ect- many times and in many ways while trying to defeat this crash.

However, for audio, in my device manager under Sound, Video, and game controllers, I don't have anything from realtek.
Is that what I'm supposed to have? What I do have there is
-AMD High Definition Audio Device
-IDT High Definition Audio CODEC

Is there maybe some sort of conflict there?

That Realtek driver is for your Ethernet, the driver your using now is dated 3/1/2009.

As for the AMD high definition, that should get updated with your ATI Radeon Driver which you downloaded.

Alright then, I've got those particular drivers updated now. The only reason the graphics driver was out of date when I first posted was because after having the newest driver and still crashing, I tried doing the whole uninstall and reboot thing so that my pc would find the default driver. I'm not sure why I assumed audio for the realtek at first haha. Anyway the ethernet driver is now up to date as well.

Unfortunately I have crashed again since updating and rebooting, so I guess the hunt continues. :(

Can you post the files again now you have updated the graphics and the network drivers. There was no dump files in the original Zip file.

Thanks

Thanks

I ran the diagnostic tool again but I don't know that any dump files actually showed up. Would an actual BSOD be required in order to receive dump files, or would I just have to run the tool following a crash and before running any cleaning programs or anything? In my entire time dealing with this crash I have only seen the blue screen once and it was fairly recent, although I don't know what caused it or if it will happen again. Other than that, unfortunatly all I get is a distorted screen an unsresponsive PC.

-Thank you

So yeah is there any way to get a dump files without an actual BSOD?
Otherwise, is there any other way to access appropriate failure/error files?

I've discovered that the crash doesn't happen if I disable my display adapter in the device manager. At least not that I've seen. I don't know if this means my GPU is just busted or what. Another possibly relevant point is when the issue started. It never happened until one time when my power adapter died. I still needed to use my PC on the battery a few times while I was working on replacing it. So my PC died a few times while running off the battery, and then was inactive for maybe a half of a week. Once I got the new power cord and was operational again, I discovered this crash randomly and have been battling it since.
