What's the Best Anti-virus?

hey all, wow thanks for all the replies. i am happy with avast free and i am going to use it. no problems at all. i also use avg free and have no complaintts. clamwin is also a good one. i know alot are dead set on mse and i also use it on vista without any issues, on windows 7 it has given me way to many problems and i don,t think that they can fix it or it would be fixed already, i want to see what kind of issues it will have on windows 8. i have tryed all of the fixes and they jst don't work for me and my windows 7 is a retail copy. ironic is my windows vista i an iso and no problems. HMM. oh well it is good to know there are other choices for free antivirus that i can choose that work without any conflicts. just my own experience. thaks for the space. poorguy

Hi zapp, we have been finding Spybot will not play well with w7. I used it on 95 and XP but kept crashing my 7 install plus slowing the whole system.

You may want to look at hardware security appliance for threat mediation and scanning.

yep; I mainly was saying that the latest release of Spybot is a major one, and it seems they are trying to address the concern I was speaking of - namely, spyware/trackware/theftware.
What "theft" is in the cyberworld today is one of those moral-relativism exercises: it depends on "local laws" and there is no "local" in things internet. That's why I posted the wired.com article on kaspersky and those who look to his outfit for help.
what's "legal" simply because of a lack of prosecution would not be "legal" to you if you are the target. Witness Google's "arrest" in Germany for flagrantly violating German privacy laws. The attitude is "catch us... catch us, bring us to trial, and we'll see what we can get away with".

So, hopefully there are other good outfits working on after-the-breach scanning, but I had the impression from a couple of encounters with the new Spybot that they are going to turn over every rock and give the user a LOT of detail; then its up to you to decide what to do with it. Definitely not a tool for a technophobe - I would not recommend it to a client, though I might use it myself.
I've never liked Spybot for realtime. Just doesn't do a good enough job for the hit you take in resources. The best way to do "realtime" is at the browser - you have far more chance of being compromised via the browser/bho's/etc than any other way.

And... repeating myself and ditto'ing others from many pages back: good 'ole WinPatrol is still a worthy product for non-technical folks who just want a little extra protection from things they don't understand. I recommend it to people who have been hit multiple times, have zero skills or logical/serial-thinking about such things, but want a chance to stop a mistake. I just tell them: "unless you are 110% dead-CERTAIN that you understand what its flagging, just say "NO""

The main reason I like, use, recommend, install AVAST is that it does a spectacular job at "super-browser" level checking of sites. In fact, if you want to quickly see the glaring weakness [missing element, really] of MSE.... install AVAST, browse the "dark underbelly" sites like gamer-thieves, hacking sites, filesharing sites, and watch how many times AVAST flags and prevents your actions. then install MSE and go to the same URL's.

Jonathan,

What you need is: AVAST Free or MS Security Essentials + Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (use passively) + Windows Firewall

To tighten up internet security, take the browser Security Level a notch higher and use pop-up blocker add-ons with the Internet Browser you use.

Oh and the most important thing: Don't download/install/copy/click on stuff that you don't trust.

Problem solved. :)

I know that ReviverSoft :).

Avast! Antivirus also has best protections but I need to purchase them. When I choose free antivirus, it has less protections.

My friend also want antivirus because his PC has many viruses. When he has an antivirus program, a critical warning appears and needs to scan the computer. After the scan, a hundreds of viruses found and he wants to delete them. But a registration window appears asking him to register his antivirus by entering serial key (he didn't know where is the serial key). After serial key is typed, users has ability to delete a virus, but he didn't. When he didn't register his antivirus, his PC always at risk.

What a fake antivirus.
I don't want this happened. Make sure you download and install antivirus you trust.

Zapp22 I know how you feel with earlier versions of Norton products, BUT this time Norton put THEIR own money where their mouth is. If you get infected while using 360 (Installed correctly of course) you are insured up to $70,000.00 on damages that has occurred to your equipment (as long as you keep it up to date, and that is like around 5 to 6x a day) So sort of a no brainer IMO to trust it.

Yeah freeware seems to be the best solution these days imo, last time i payed for a anti virus was in 2005 with norton 360. Not very good imo,let a virus in that let the computer unusable and it couldn't remove it even though it found it. Had to reinstall windows  So far with avast I have had very good luck, also have malwarebytes on the side like you do and it works wonders.

MSE has a pretty good reputation because Microsoft really does want to protect it's operating systems. A lot of folks also recommend using the free Malwarebytes on-demand scanner as a second tool.

Malwarebytes

If you decide to try MSE, I'd suggest you first run the official uninstaller tool for any previous anti-virus you might have installed on your computer. Many times control panel > programs and features > uninstall leaves behind pieces of the anti-virus and that could prevent a good install of a new product.

MSE does allow setting what action to take in "Default actions".
I believe if this is set to "Quarantine" it would allow for restoring.
I don't know for sure as I've never had anything found.
If MSE Quarantine doesn't work the way I believe it should, i would like to know that.

I use System Backup Imaging so i can restore no matter what A/V and A/M I use and what they do.
