Great answers.
sadly there is only one crippling flaw.

compatability.

Good luck trying to get XP 32bit drivers to run with Win7 64.

I love win7.
but ive only been using it for 24 hours (after using it and going back to XP).
and im already having to spend hour+ looking for

Why my Xbcd (NON 360) controller will not work in win7.
I guess the answer is out there somewhere,
but between the millions of vista answers out there. I still havent found it.
(And I doubt BING has the magic arrow either), guess ill go verify that.

Bolded part is impossible regardless of what OS the driver is meant for. If it's 32-bit, it won't work on a 64-bit OS. As for compatibility being a crippling flaw, I have to disagree. Pretty much everything that works in Vista works in 7.

Also, if you're that dependent on XP drivers, why not download Windows Virtual PC + Windows XP Mode and do whatever it is you need to do in that?

That's a moot point, really. You won't even get XP 32bit drivers to work with XP 64!

32bit drivers WILL NOT work with 64bit Operating Systems!

When Microsoft created Vista, they understood the inherent dangers of most drivers (particularly Display) being Kernel mode drivers, and they switched to a primarily User mode driver model. This is the one reason why you couldn't use XP driver for Vista.

Seven uses the same driver model as Vista, so if you don't have a specific driver for Seven, you can always fall back to a Vista driver.

Microsoft also upgraded the Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) to 1.1 in Seven, making display driver more efficient and less resource intensive than WDDM 1.0 drivers from Vista...

You can probably find the drivers on Microsoft's website for game controllers. At least that is where I got the one for my 360 controller.

I regards to XP/Seven/Vista I use XP everyday at work...but it has its quarks and limitations. I actually removed Seven x64 RC 7100 from my laptop. I kept having driver issues and things never seemed to run right since the get go...it was using more memory that my pre-installed Vista 64-bit. Regarding the virtual PC...I have tried using Virtual PC 2005 and it never seemed to run as good as just having the OS directly installed, and what is the point in Virtual XP Mode anyway??? I mean if you are going to have the ability to use XP if it is obsolete what is the point of replacing XP? Doesnt that defeat the purpose. I would have to say that im not upgrading to Seven for a while...at least till the first service pack.

I would have to say, at least in my situation, Vista x64 seems to have been the best OS I have ever used. I have never yet had a blue screen since I got a PC with it pre-installed or when I install Business x86 on another partition. Mem usage and CPU usage are good and all, better than Seven and XP.

So to answer the main question XP or Seven, I say neither. Vista works great for me so no complaints.

Me too.

I say Win7 because if WinVista 64 was great, Win7 64 would be brilliant, as it is could simply be seen as an upgrade to Win 6.0 to Win 6.1, like Win Xp was Win 5.0 to Win 5.1

The new version Windows Virtual PC (the underlying technology behind the Virtual XP Mode update) is meant to be used as a stop-gap measure to help users (corporations, really) migrate to Windows 7 untill such time that their custom applications can be updated to be fully compatible with Seven. It is NOT meant to be used permanently.

I must also say that with the right hardware support, Windows 7 Virtual XP Mode runs pretty smoothly for me, and has in fact allowed me to pull out an old scanner that I could not use with Vista x64 because of no drivers. Canon never released x64 drivers for the Lide 20 usb scanner. Now, thanks to Virtual XP mode, I can continue to use it again, until such time as I can get a suitable replacement for it that works natively in Windows 7...

I don't really like XP over Win2K but due to some issues I had to "upgrade". That being said, XP because there are only a couple of things in 7 that I like. Also, on my system, XP blows 7 away in terms of performance. Here's just one test...

p9dns.png
xn5kbm.png

P.S. Asking this question here is kinda silly. Most here are fanatical about Windows 7. ;)

these speed results (and others) are like mine. XP runs rings around 7.
People talk about 'improved' memory management, under xp i'd get about 11000 kb/s transfer speed, with 7 the needle gets stuck at 8600.

Load balancing. Yeah right. Install a good process manager (i use process lasso) and you see this balancing going on. This app works overtime capping processes that hug the cpu.

7 at idle is almost silent. Open 1 app and you see one or more cores shooting to max.

ad infinitum

i always like xp it was stable...and good....

But i am more fond with windows 7 since it is faster and allows you to share files across network more easily

Also it is much easier to navigate to pics, videos, downloads, music, networks, etc

Also it does not slow down even when i am playing heavy gaming or doing 3d graphics design...

thats why i am fond of windows 7 and many more

Yep. I see so many here saying that 7 is faster than XP but all they are telling you is seat of the pants feeling. I would bet that if they actually ran some benchmarks they would see that in fact it isn't.

I would love to test a quad core with a couple of gigs of fast ram. The differences probably wouldn't be as big but I would still put my money on XP.

Except the fact that benchmarks have already been done all over the internet...also such benchmarks between XP and 7 cannot be fair due to a difference in test variables. OS + 3SPs + 9 years of refinement vs. Pre-Release OS...want some fair benchmarks? Throw XP Pre-SP against 7

It is pretty sad that I have to re-iterate the point all the time and yet people still don't get it

Benchmarks are not about 'fairness' - They're about "what-is".

XP + SP3, is.

XP + SP2, is.

XP + SP1, is, and so are all the rest, on down...

If people choose to, they can "benchmark" any version of Windows 7, from build 7600 (the 'real' thing) ,
down through 7100, Beta, or whatever the hell they want to.

"Benchmarks" have always been biased, one way or the other,
usually by the "Independent Agency" conducting the "benchmark".

Most people do not have the 'technical expertise' to initiate their own,
nor do they have knowledge or resources to pit one against the other, keeping all things equal.

You neglect to acknowledge the fact that the "3SPs + 9 years of refinement" heavily contributed to the development of the "Pre-Release OS".

Your post of "non-information" makes one assume that the XP operating system fared better than the competitor.

I haven't read any of the re-iterations , but I certainly do fit into the category of "...yet people still don't get it". :D

So Xp it's better to use on quad core pc's?

not neccessarily.all you can take from that is that XP performs better on his system. Zidane makes a great point that far too many people don't seem to get. Windows 7 isn't even released yet! XP has had 3 service packs and years worth of fine tuning. Wait til seven's been out for a while and hardware/software vendors are onboard. If 7 performs this well at this early stage then it's safe to say that it is streets ahead of XP or any other OS currently available

Where do you people get this XP has been fine tuned (for speed) over the last 8 years? If anything XP probably got slower when they introduced SP2. I don't recall reading any KB article addressing performance. It's all bug and security fixes.
