Windows 7 Home Premium (x64) Service Pack 1 (build 7601)

Hello:

At the beginning of Sept 2012 I posted a BSOD thread here that was eventually resolved. The situation then, as now, was/is that I received an error about Windows Desktop Manager then went to BSOD. I received some great assistance by a 7 Forum Adviser but still could not resolve the problem. This included 36 hours of driver verifier, chkdsk, scan, etc and attempts at restore and repair.

I received a suggestion to re-seat my Memory Chips by another adviser and then then told to repair with the Windows install DVD. I did not have one but I was able to create a bootable DVD-R and USB Flash. The USB would NOT boot but I was able to get the DVD to go into upgrade and the files reloaded, which allowed the laptop to begin working again.

Two days ago the BSOD reappeared. Without going into more detail of what I have tried, I am posting here hoping for assistance.

I am attaching the Grab All zipped file as well as a BSOD file created in Niro's viewer.

Arc:

Thanks. A couple of comments questions prior to running driver verifier:

  • The lap top crashes are chronic, meaning every time I start the pc. The furthest the start up will get is loading the desktop icons, then crash.
  • I can only boot my laptop in Safe Mode, so BSOD crashes are immediate. Will driver verifier produce useful results?
  • Therefor does it check drivers that are not loaded at start up? The last time i had the problem with this laptop the DV ran for 48 hours in safe mode with no results/crashes.

No, Driver verifier will not be useful. Can you upload your MSINFO32.nfo file ?

  1. Click on the start button
  2. Type "msinfo32" (without quotes) in the search bar of the start menu, click the resulting link. It will open the System Information window.
  3. File>Save. In the "File Name" filed, put "MSINFO32" (without Quote), give the save location to desktop, and click the "save" button.
  4. Give the time for processing, it will save a .nfo file on your desktop.
  5. Zip it, and upload it following the instruction.

I'm not sure as to why, but I didn't see your comment here; only the e-mail notice. Anyway, attached is the msinfo32.nfo zip.

I actually got the following file downloaded. \BIOS_Gateway_1.05_A_A\BIOS_Gateway_1.05_Windows.

What is a bit troubling is that the date of the file is 12/30/2009 and alludes to "Sets the critical low of battery from 3% to 5% and the warning of battery from 5% to 7%." The readme file is dated 07/13/2010 and the text in the readme is simply "Run "BIOS.BAT" in pure DOS or Windows x86/x64 OS environment."

What I need to know is the proper procedure to execute the batch file. Do I restart into Safe Mode Command Prompt the type the BIOS batch file? Does it matter? Can I simply execute from Windows Safe Mode?

I just downloaded the v1.04 that you suggested and there is no readme file.

I'm going to plead total confusion on this. According to the link I provided BIOS v1.04 was released on 2/23/10. But you're saying you have v1.05 and it was released on 12/30/09 (before v1.04). Hence, my confusion. Is it possible v1.05 is for a different Gateway model?

Here's the "How To Download" instructions from v1.04:

I downloaded the file you just posted for v1.04 as well. The v 1.05 is here: Gateway Support - Downloads & Support Documents, then I selected NV53 under Notebooks. Then I went to the Support tab, selected Drivers and Downloads, then selected the BIOS which is down the page a few lines.

I don't need to know how to download the file -- I have both v1.04 and v 1.05 downloaded -- the question is "how" and from where do I execute the BIOS flash? Do I simply double click on the BIOS.bat file right in Windows Safe Mode or reboot and go to the Command prompt in Safe Mode. Thanks.

My apologies, Jim. I must have misunderstood your previous post. :o

Every BIOS I've updated had a .exe file that I just double-clicked. I have no clue about how to handle a bat file. Again, my sincerest apologies.
