I am endeavouring to create a dual boot sytem on my Win 7 PC with WinXP. I have tried this tutorial:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/66010-sata-drivers-load-windows-xp-setup-dual-boot.html
but as I do not have a floppy drive installed I am stumpted. I do not have a Manufacturers Device CD.
I have been going round and round in circles trying to locate the correct XP Sata driver. Some threads suggest that the driver can be found by looking into the Motherboard drivers but the only one I can find relates to the actual WD hard drive. This from the Dell website is an exe file and upon opening the file there is no .inf file.
Other threads suggest that it is not practical to try to install XP on a PC with Win 7 installed but that one should install XP first then Win 7.
Am I wasting my time?
PS No rush at all with this as my time is very limited. I am looking after my wife who has just come out of Hospital having broken her hip a few weeks ago so I may not reply to a response very quickly!

The Dell MBoard driver set is the SATA driver you need...doesn't matter what brand HDD you use...
Travel to the Dell site...enter your Service tag # from the PC and DLoad and save all XP drivers.
Burn them to CD and very early on in the XP setup process there will be a bottom screen prompt "Press F6 to install additional drivers"...do so.
Then put in the CD with all the drivers and XP will find what it needs and the setup process should continue without a hitch.
Best of Luck...and let us know.

Many thanks for your response. I have been on the Dell site and fed in my service tag. Under Drivers there is no way to tell what are XP drivers nor indeed what drivers are for the motherboard. Here's a screenshot of the drivers on the site:
View attachment 241897
Although it indicates Windows 7 in the OS box there is no choice for XP
Any further help you can offer will be much appreciated.

I have now downloaded and all the drivers shown on the Dell site and burnt them to disc (It took a DVD as there was over 2GB of drivers). I put the DVD in immediately after pressing F6 but got the same immediate error "Cannot locate a Floppy Drive "A" on this computer, Press F3 to Quit or Enter to continue. Pressing Enter just goes back to the Press "S" screen in a loop. So can't get any further!

I have searched more and have come to the conclusion that Windows XP wont run on my PC so sadly I must give up this venture. I run two PC's at the moment, One Win 7 and one XP. Was hoping to reduce the overall footprint but as they say "The best laid plans etc>>
Thnks for your effort.
I just hate giving up!

Update:
I thought i would have another go at this and have located the correct SATA drivers that I need . I have slipstreamed these into the set up file togther with SP 1nd SP3. All went well and I produced the necessary ISO file and burnt it to disc. Trouble now is I don't get the "Welcome to Setup" window when i boot up from this CD. The Windows files just load up but then i get the BSOD that says Windows will sut down to avoid damege to the HD.
Any ideas where I have gone wrong here?

Hope you didn't search too far and wide. Despite what Dell may have for it, you can find the XP chipset driver here,

Just need to use 7zip to extract it.

As you found out, "press F6..." to install drivers during the XP install will only work with a floppy disk. You could use a USB floppy drive, maybe someone you know has one you could borrow for a short time?

Slipstreaming the drivers onto the XP install disk has worked for me in the past. If you get the correct drivers it will work. Sounds like something went amiss when you built the slipstream disk.

Another possibility is to change the controller setting in the BIOS to IDE or non-AHCI. This will allow you to install XP but then you would need to make changes to your Win 7 install to get it to boot.

I personally haven't setup a dual boot system in years. I just install VirtualBox and then create VMs for any and all OSes I want to use. Works great for me. However, if the reason you want to dual boot XP is because you want to play old games then VMs aren't a particularly good solution.

How on earth can I slipstream these into the install file. They don't even look like files! I use nLite .

and the location of the SATA driver is,

12-10_xp32-64_sb\$_OUTDIR\Packages\Drivers\SBDrv\SB7xx\AHCI_svr\XP

Dell said I needed Intel drivers
If it is the computer in your specs, Dell really are idiots then as no way you can use Intel drivers with an AMD system
