Solved New CPU cooler for my PC

I never had a 212, but I had a similar cooler made by Cooler Master. There are a lot of opinions about the direct contact heat pipes, and most everyone has their preferences. On mine, I filled the gaps with paste and used wax paper to wipe it off, just filling in the holes, it's usually very porus between the pipes. Then I filled them again and smoothed it out, tying to level it with the pipes. I rubbed it off the pipes themselves very lightly until I could just begin to see the copper coming through and stopped there. Then tint the CPU. Put a layer of paste on the CPU and take a dry coffee filter and wipe it off. It will fill in the microscopic pores in the CPU but leave none on the surface. When you have it wiped off, you will notice it's a slightly different color. That's what you want. Then put the cooler on. That's what I did and it worked out well for me. You can Google Direct contact heat pipes and applying paste and get a lot f different opinions. Choose the one that suits you best, just understanding the oblect is to have a very thin layer on the cooler base and make good solid contact with the cpu and cooler base. The method I used got me better results than I was expecting, YMMV.

The Arctic cleaning kit came today and it worked great to shine up the thermal pad. Hopefully the cooler and thermal paste will arrive tomorrow and I can install it. My Samsung 840 Pro also arrived today, but since I took the motherboard out, I can't try it out yet. Well, something to look forward too...

Probably as close as I will get for a few years anyway. This PC is only 2 years old and is still pretty capable. I will install Windows 7 on the new Samsung SSD and use the old OCZ Vertex III as a test drive for different Linux Distros and such.

Alright guys, I finally got the Coolermaster Hyper 212 plus today and just finished installing it. Installation didn't go to badly and things seem to be working fine. The average core temps at idle are all about 30 to 32 degrees, which is around 8-10 degrees cooler than with the stock cooler.

I want to use Prime 95 to run a stress test and check out the high end temps, but was wondering if I needed to wait for the thermal paste to set before doing that.

Good work! No you don't have to wait for the paste to cure. Running Prime will help it though. Let it cool once in awhile, then use it normally. Arctic Silver is said to take 200 heat/cool cycles to cure.

OK guys, here are the results of the Prime 95 stress test. Needless to say I am very pleased with the results, considering my stock Intel CPU cooler failed the test within a couple of minutes.
