Hello,

I am trying to get familiar with Windows 7 after many years of using XP. I have been trying to download files I had on my XP machine (copied to a CD) to my new laptop and can not seem to be able to do it. What to do?

Does the laptop have a cd/dvd drive? If so, put the cd in, and treat the drive as you would a normal hard drive. Navigate through the folders and files found on the cd. Copy or Send To My Documents. Or drag and drop.

It really doesn't work any differently in Windows 7 as it did in XP. You can use Copy/Paste or drag & drop to move/copy files in Win 7 just the same way as was done in XP.

I somehow managed to send my dvd files to Documents.

I guess the thing about XP that I can't find in W7 is the menu bar- File, Edit, View, Favorites, etc. Also, what is the equivilent of my Favorites list in the upper right hand corner below my forward and back arrows in XP?

Right click below the address bar and you will see a menu, click on what you want be added to IE, but it should already be there.

Don`t you have the word Favorites up near the top left corner below the forward and reverse arrows ?

In order to see your favorites in XP, you have to add the Links toolbar by going to View->Toolbars then put a check next to Links. This will put a Links toolbar on the Windows Explorer Address bar. You can then go to View->Toolbars and uncheck Lock the Toolbars which will then let you resize/move the various Toolbars to your liking. You can also view the Favorites by simply clicking on Favorites in the menu bar. You can add a new Favorite to the Links toolbar by dragging a location from the Explorer window to the links bar and dropping it there.

To add the menu bar to Win 7 Explorer, click on Organize->Layout and put a check next to Menu bar.

I see many people lamenting the loss of the Up button that was available in XP. In Win 7 Explorer, that has been replaced by a much more powerful way of navigating. In the Explorer address bar of Win 7, the locations are clickable meaning you can click on any location in the address to go directly there. In addition, each location is followed by a little arrowhead that you can click on to drop down a list of locations within that location. You can click on a location in that dropdown list to go directly there. Here's a screen cap of what I'm talking about:

Okay, I have a menu bar. I still don't have a drop down arrow next to the forward and back arrows like in XP. I see it in Strollin's screen shot above but not on my W7 IE screen.

Also, The favorites list in W7 goes horizontally as opposed to the XP list dropping down verticely. I have about 34 bookmarks in my XP window and want to put the same in my W7 browser windows.

Also, I keep getting a small window repeatedly asking me the same question regarding having a default browser. see image.

Do you want IE (Internet Explorer) to be your "default" browser, or are you using Firefox, or Google Chrome as your browser for the Internet?

Anne, any question you may have, is in this tutorial for Windows 7 http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/257-windows-7-tutorial-index.html

In Windows Explorer, press the "Alt" key to see the old-style menus. :)

Right click below the address bar and you will see a menu, click on what you want be added to IE, but it should already be there.

Don`t you have the word Favorites up near the top left corner below the forward and reverse arrows ?

IE9 doesn't display the old-style menus by default.
